I just bought some 25 DVD spindle of Maxells DVD-R. I have heard many of them are made by Ritek and not very good. How do you tell?
    Thanks!

    What SilverBlade said.

You have to look at the label.

It will say one or the other.

Good luck finding MADE IN JAPAN these days though. Hard to come by.

You are better off just ordering Taiyo Yuden from RIMA.COM as that is also MADE IN JAPAN media.

Download DVDinfopro. Its a free, short download program and with it you can check the I.D of the media.

Its also great for doing full disc reads to check for errors.

DVD Decrypter will also give you the MEDIA CODE ID and works well as a burning application as well as a ripper.

DVD Decrypter is no longer being updated but the same company (which I think is really just one guy) is now working on ImgBurn which has the same interface but just burns ... no ripping.

For now either is fine to use but in the future as new burners and new media comes out ImgBurn will be the one to use for burning.

    Both programs are freeware.

  6. Today I purchased 200 DVD-r's at Costco for $46. They were TDK, but they were made in Taiwan. BUT..being the good price they are, I got them. I used DVDinfoPro to find out they were TTH02, which is TDK's own brand. and www.nomorecoasters.com indicates that media code on an oficcial TDK disc is really good, maybe 2 'levels' under TY, but still no where near crap. I'm going to test these out within a couple of weeks and tell how good/crap they are.

Some packaging doesnt even have where they are made or is covered by the store sticker.
One way to tell in the store is the old Japan made were yellow. The new Taiwan made are an orangeish color top.
In my area it's just cheaper and easier to go to Rima and buy Taiyo Yuden.

I brought a Costco/TDK +R disc home from work to inspect it because we were having problems with them. I checked the media code and was shocked to discover they were CMC disks. Shame on you TDK. These discs are pure crap!

Be sure to download DVDinfopro, it's a valuable tool. And DVD Decrypter is an absolute must. Get it while you can!

    Good Luck!

TDK really isn't big on its own DVD+R production it seems. The only place really where +R discs with TDK media codes are being made is Luxembourg which seems to have fairly limited production capacity. Why TDK doesn't get CMC to make its own +R discs the way it does with its -R media codes is anyone's guess.

I checked the Maxell DVD 25 pack (still in packing) I have and it says: Made in Taiwan. I got it for $10 plus can get it to $5 with a rebate. So they are pretty cheap but if they are going to give problems later then I would rather spend a little more and get something that will work.

Any recomendation for that will work good for the Samsung R120 DVD recorder?
    Thanks again!!

Is it a consensus then that any DVD-R that is made in Japan should be better then any Made in Taiwan. I am planning to look for that next time I go for DVD shopping.

Just buy the Taiyo Yuden DVD-R discs direct from RIMA.COM and then you have no surprises of what it is you are getting.

That won't help if he wants Maxell DVD-R. In some burners MXLRG03 burns better than TYG02. From what I've been able to gather, the inkjet printable Maxell retail DVD media is always MIJ.

But isn't it outright deceiptful and dishonest to label something 'MIJ' when its made in taiwan ?? How can they do that, and get away with it ? Why do Maxell sully their reputation like this ? It don't make sense.

  19. I've refused to stop buying Maxell unless its Made in Japan. Some guy at futureshop tried to tell me the quality is the same, but we all know better.

More than likely the "Made in Taiwan" sticker that was supposed to be on top of the "Made in Japan" label came off.
