What kind does it use?
I'm curious cause I noticed that it sometimes prohibits copying from a dvd player to a recorder.

In and of itself no. But if it comes from a "legit" source than they can put in some forms of drm "digital rights management" which you are not supposed to mess with. Generally though 99% of the time divx will be open.
