if your ps2 stop playing your dvd and blue back games. this is how u fix it
here is all the tools u will need (big and little screw driver/Q-tips and Alcohol pads)
(red arrow) unscrew all theses screws
flip the ps2, so u can see the ps2 sign
there will be a small sticker here that u will have to cut
(red arrow) lift up were u see the two red arrows (dont lift to high)
now push forward untill the top is pass the memory card slots. now lift the right side up (dont not lift the left side)
(red arrow) there is a wire here that u must not ripp out
(green arrow) this is why i said not to lift the left side. if u rip this wire out your ps2 is f**ked
(red arrow) unscrew all theses screws (will need the small screw driver)
(blue arrow) u will have to turn on the ps2 when this top is off and u must not look and the lazer
now that the top is off turn on your ps2 and hit eject so the tray comes out , then turn off the ps2
(red arrow 1) clean the eye with the Q-tips and Alcohol pads
(red arrow 2) this weel is to ajust the eye. if your ps2 is not playing dvd ps2 game or blue back ps2 games, just move this weel up or down untill the ps2 plays all your games (ive done this alot and my ps2 works great and i got my ps2 when it first came out)
here is a better look at the weel
the easyest way to adjust the weel so u can get your ps2 up and running your games
(eye pust be cleaned first)
(arrow 1)when your tray is out put the cd top back on (do not put screws back on) just hold your hand on top of the cd top. now turn on your ps2 and see if your game will play. if your game did not play eject the tray and turn off the ps2 and take off the cd top and adjust the weel again
(keep doing this untill it plays dvd and blue back games)
(start by moving the up first. if game does not work start moving the weel down one noch at a time)
(arrow 2)when pluging in the power wire watch that the power wire slot dose not come out
when your done cleaning DO NOT FLIP your ps2 on its back to screw in the screws. just lean it over the side of the table, then screw in the screws
u dont want to flip it and get the eye dirty again
P.S if anyone has any question feel free to ask

Nice post, but this isnt a gaming forum though....im sure a mod may eventually lock this.
VTMI have the staff of power, now it's up to me to use it to its full potential to command my life and be successful. -
well it is off topic -- and oddly enough , i need to do this today
thanks for the info ..."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
might as well hit it up with the good old compressed air while you got it apart too!!
this trick does work quite well and beats the hell out of paying some douche at you local game store to do it."To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research." - Steven Wright

Works really welll if the laser is dirty, However if the laser is dying though all the cleaning in the world wont help
(also I would use 90% isopropyl alcohol instead of the pads)
Doing this is always the first step to trying to fix a skipping ps2 or if you have RSOD (Red screen of death errors)
You can also adjust the laser pots (I only do this if the laser is not reading at all) Same as cleaning with a q-tip though if the laser is dyng it will still eventually going to die
You can also order a new laser assmebly or a whole new drive
New drives seem to be more reliable than just buying a laser assembly
I have worked on about 600+ PS2 over tha last 4 years either modchippping or fixing problems and for all of those I had to fix about 80% have had laser problems about 1/2 of those I could fix by cleaning
Most people would rather get a new ps2 now with the price of a new laser and for me installing it for them though.
xbox lasers are still cheap enough for people that I do a lot of laser replacing for them -

(400 so or more I have modchipped some modchipped ps2s I have worked on neeed laser work also if the laser is real bad I wont chip them either)
Order of fixing problems for laser that I use
Step 1 clean lens (If that doesnt work)
Step 2 laser tray height adjustment (what you call adjusting the laser) (If that doesnt work)
Step 3 Laser pot adjustment (what I call adjusting the laser)(if that doesnt work)
Step 4 Buy new laser or complete drive with laser
Also you guide only adjusts the laser tray height (Obatining a optimal distance for the tray increases the disk reflectivity for the laser to provide better game reading)
Also In versions 1-3 you have to leave one cable removed or the cog the white gear will readjust itself
I would say adjusting the tray height is a big help also most of those work pretty well after the adjustment but when the laser is truly dying no amount of heght adjustment can help but it can help in a lot of cases
Your guide does not adjust the laser voltage with the potentiometers when you decrease the resistance it gives the laser more juice (too much juice will cause the lens to burn out)
Be happy that yours is still working most of the people I know that had a version 1 ps2, their laser gave up the ghost a long time ago (I do lots of work for pawn shops and videogame reseller places)
They even have a class action lawsuit for people to get money for this now that have had laser problems
However the information you gave is definitely good info -

You can get a new assembly or completely new dvd drive here
www.richspsxparts.com
This guy is a real reliable guy
The assembly is cheaper but a whole new drive itself seems to work better
and should 100% fix your problem
(I would recommend a new dvdrom drive since laser assembly are sometimes kinda flaky from my experience since you cant really tell if they are new or used and sometimes people might mixed broken or working lasers if they have a whole pile of them lying round)
*update
Before you order parts
look at the info he has about the thing circled in green here (the white laser gear)
http://www.richspsxparts.com/dres.html (try cleaning your white laser gear first)
