    does anyone have a guide for correctly setting up the xvid codec for best quality? my source material is very good but when i convert to xvid i see a lot of compression artifacts.

    If you're getting compression artifacts, then it sounds to me as if your bitrate is too low for the resolution, or the resolution is too high for the bitrate. However, about the best explanation I've run across for XviD in general, and the settings specifically, is Crusty's:
