Sadly my crystal ball is away being polished so I can't see which player you have. You'll have to tell us the make and model.

svcd is mpeg2 but its encoded at a lower bitrate (in the 2000 range) and at a resolution at 480x480 so its not compatible with dvd. Plus the audio is 44.1 khz not 48khz like dvd.

Chances are if it doesn't do vcd it won't do svcd.

    EDIT

According to user reports it actually CAN play both.

Have you tried using rewritable cds instead of cdr's??? Some players won't read recordables but CAN read rewritables. Try it out.

It's possible, but certainly history shows that VCD seems to be the most widely supported, with SVCD a distant 2nd. In my experience, anyway. So there's usually a much greater chance that it supports just VCD (and not SVCD) than just SVCD (and not VCD). Not to say that it can't, though.

As yoda mentioned, users have reported successful playback of (X)(S)VCDs without too many problems, which would indicate that perhaps your encoding or authoring processes for VCD may not be correct ATM. Either that or your player just doesn't like the CD media you're using.
    If in doubt, Google it.
