    I have an opportunity to pick up a used JVC HR-J692U VHS deck and I was wondering if it is any good?

    The menu offers a Picture Control that can be set to: Norm, Edit, Soft or Sharp. I thought I read somewhere in this forum that Edit is the best setting?

    And there is Video Stabilizer that can be turned on and off...I'm going to assume that this is not a TBC?

    Thanks,
    gammer

    The transports in these later JVC units seem to be sub par.
    I would recommend an S-VHS unit in order to get the S-Video connection.
    Most JVC VCRs have similar Picture Controls.
    The stabilizer is not a TBC.

    It's okay for a VHS unit. I like Sharp better for a VHS VCR. Maybe even Sony.

    All are inferior to even low end S-VHS units. High end S-VHS units wold be better.

    Thanks for the advice and link DAVIDECK.
    I will look for somthing better.

    Lordsmurf, I have a 4 head Sharp VCR that I currently use, but it is only a mono deck. But it gives the best picture out of any other 4 head VCR I have tried (non-svhs). Especially if I am experiencing jitter or a jumpy picture...I try it out in the Sharp and the jitter or jumpyness is gone.

    I own two Sharp VHS stereo units. I've talked about them on the forum before, gave exact model numbers and everything. You can still buy Sharp units new off amazon.com, and you can always get them used off eBay (nothing wrong with used equipment, great way to save money and still get lik-enew quality video goods).

    I use the Sharps for recording VHS, and for playing VHS when S-VHS units fail to work on some stubborn tapes.

  6. You may want to consider one of the Mitsubishi s-vhs VCR's. I have the Mitsubishi HS-U781 S-VHS VCR and imo it's one of th best. I bought it to replace the high end JVC I had.

    My wife has been using a Sharp VHS VCR for several hours a day for years and years and it STILL looks good! Nice transport in those older Sharp units.

    gammer, it sounds like your old mono unit may have a mighty fine transport. I would expect that any recordings made on it would be best captured by it.

    FWIW, my take on VCRs is here;
