I purchase a Hi-Val HDVD168L from CompUSA last night at there twentyfour hour sale . I had checked the list and found out it was a rebadged BenQ DW 1640 . I could'nt pass that up for only thirty bucks after rebate . When I took it out of the box found out it was'nt even rebadged , BenQ label right on the unit . So I went to BenQ's website and got the latest firmware , the firmware checker and the Q Suite . But the drive wont take the firmware . The checker says it has G series firmware . I have checked Hi - Val and I O Magic's websites and dont even see the drive listed . I really would like to use all the great features of this drive . Can someone please help ?

To apply the BenQ firmware, you'll probably have to use a hacked one. Check out http://rpc1.org and/or http://www.cdfreaks.com. Using any of these firmware will void your warranty, but for a $30 burner, the risk is probaqbly acceptable.

I've visited those two sites you named . No luck . All I want to do is get this drive to take the B series firmware so it acts like a DW-1640 which is what it really is . Does anybody else have any ideas ? Thanks .

you need to check the BENQ FORUM there is a thread there regarding your question. If not then just ask your question there. i got one of those drives as well from compusa. i think you'll need to use the BQFLASHER to convert the drive to a BENQ 1640. when i return from vacation i'll flash my drive and give you the results.

I just successfully flashed my HIVAL to the BENQ 1640 firmware BSLB. To Flash the HIVAL drive from COMPUSA you need to download the WinDWFlash and BSLB CVT file. You can find them at the BENQ FORUM at Cdfreaks.com.
