    I notice that all the major software shops (like Best Buy) stopped selling software that allows you to back up a commercial DVD. So I guess it must be illegal to sell this kind of software. So if I get the software on the internet, will somebody send me a letter advising me that I have broken the law?

    Depends on where you live. In Canada, fair use still applies. As for the other end, check to see if they have extradition treaties etc.
