I shot our recent trip to Thailand on a Sony HDR-HC1 at the camera's
highest HDV 1080i resolution (1440 x 1080).
I now want to share the edited version with friends and my extended
family, most of which own HD capable televisions.
How can I burn DVDs that will play at the full-resolution 1080i on their TVs?
What's the point of shooting in HDV if I am forced to down convert
to regular 740 x 480 DV resolution to burn a DVD? I might as well
just have shot it on my old Sony VX2000, which is far superior in
low-light to the HDR-HC1.
Any advice appreciated,
Zen

The camera companies will not mention THAT little secret!!!
You can only output to file or to tape. and that you can then play out to your TV if you have the right connections.
That's it! No DVD format you can go out and set up today will allow you to play at that rez. Will have to wait till that part of it comes to us. We hope!No DVD can withstand the power of DVDShrink along with AnyDVD! -
Until HD DVD players become widespread, ... maybe in 5-7 years, you will still need to downscale to DVD distribution copies.
In the meantime, the burden is on your distant viewer to buy a specialized MPeg4 player (for DivX, WMV-HD, etc.) or rig a computer to play HDTV files to a HDTV display.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

You could check out DVHS.
Another option is to convert to .ts and burn that to a data DVD. You'd have to playback on a PC.

Zen of Encoding,
Just courious as to what file format does the HDR-HC1 capture?
dphirschler,
There are DVD players that will accept .ts files but they will be limitted to about 40 minutes per single layer disc.

There is a way to encode HD video with DIVX 6 to full 1280 x 720 and then simply burn to DVD as a data disc, There is also a disc Player that will play these files directly to your TV. Have a look at the Divx.com site for info. I've seen some of the sample files and they are glorious on the PC.
At least until we can burn HD discs it might be an alternative. By the way the sample files seem to range btween 30 to 40 Megs per minute.
Another way would be to set up a PC based media center hooked up to your HDTV and use a software based player that can handle the HD files. No DVD can withstand the power of DVDShrink along with AnyDVD! -
