I've been checking some things, and using the DVD mpeg2enc preset in combination with mplayer decoding, you should get hard coded subtitles. The resulting mpg files should be easy to compile in Toast.

  2. Oh my Dear Case thanks. I was trying things but nothing really worked, even I was tempted to go to the dark side, but here you are with a new solution to try.

So let see if I got it straight DVD mpeg2enc with mplayer, all the other tabs, audio and subtitles the same as you told me before?

I big kiss and thanks again,

    Huifa.

    Manolo,

It's great that you are interested in this stuff and are taking part in discussion here, but you posted this 17 hours after asking your question.

I think you are expecting too much if you expect an answer in that time. Please recall that everyone who is answering your questions is doing so for free and on a voluntary basis. If you get an answer, then great. If you don't get one, don't complain.

Yes you are right, I have to plead guilty of anxiety, I did not mean to be unpolite, I know everybody do this for free and I respect that.

I am very sorry, and promise that won't happen again. Thanks for taking your time to tell me.

    Cheers lads,

    M.

PS: By the way new ideas have arrived.

No problem Manolo, just a friendly reminder

I hope Case's solution works for you. I haven't done anything with subtitles for a long time now, so I'm letting him answer all the tough questions

PS I don't suppose you are the same Manolo who writes a very funny blog about shoes?

  6. Case:

I just finished the process with ffmpegX as you told me to get the hard coded subtitles with DVD mpeg2enc preset in combination with mplayer decoding.

But I am confuzed, I got a few files from that process:
One .avi.ff.mpv with movie and no sound,
other .avi.ff.mpa with sound and no movie,
other .avi.ff.mpg with movie and sound but no subtitles, I played it on VLC, Xine and QT but could not find subtitles anywhere.

    Did I miss a point?

Sorry to be such a bother but i do not know how to get the results and I think I have been very carefull following instructions.

If you have more suggestion i'll be glad to try them.

    Best wishes,

    Huifa.

I went to the forum of ffmpegX and find a topic about the subtitles, and why they were always so small even I you choose a size 4 or 5, in there was the answer that I needed.

So I got the binaires (withou knownig what they were o what for), I expanded them and installed them in the ffmpegx Application Suport folder in the Library Folder and thats it.

Now I get my .avi with harcoded subtitles so I can burn them into DVD keeping the original AC3 audio.

But this could not be possible without the always helpfull Case, and the contribution of others who add tips in the process.

So to you Case a really big kiss and the most sincere thanks for you patience.

    Best wishes,

    Huifa.

  8. It seems like a happy ending.

I got the answer that I needed from this topic thanks to Case, Huifa, Thoughton and the others who died trying to bring in an answer (keeping the drama).

    Cheers Lads and Lady,

    M

PS: Blog about shoes? No it's not me.

mpv should be video only, mpa should be audio only, mpg should be the mix of both. mpv and mpa are temporary files, so you may delete them after the mpg file has been created.
(If you had set for AC3 audio, then you would have had an .ac3 file instead of an .mpa file. But that is not related to subs.)

Subtitles should now be part of the video, easy to detect in any player.

The reason for missing subs may be because of your ffmpegX setup. I can't think of anything else. Are you running Mac OS X 10.3.x or 10.4.x? Is your ffmpegX version 0.0.9t r4? Did you install the matching binaries as indicated by the Install binaries window?
Check this: Set ffmpegX up for encoding your movie, including setting the subs (Filters>Subtitles>Load subs). But instead of clicking Encode, click Play (top, right). Do you get subtitles then?

Wow, thanks. We're not used to this much gratitude here. I'm glad you got it working. If you can spare a shareware donation, then don't forget the author of ffmpegX.

Ok i know this is a lot of encoding but this is how i get my Tv episodes (AVI) onto DVD

First start by opening toast 7...under the "Video" tab choose "Video CD"
Drop in the episodes..it doesnt matter if the little coloured bar at the bottom goes into the red at this moment in time
Now goto "File" And "Save as Disk Image"..Save it somewhere..After it has encoded, right click and "Mount it"
Now open the Disk image and goto the "MPEGAV" Folder ...You should see your episodes there...they will be called "AVSEQ01.DAT" files
So depending how many episodes you dropped in you'll have as many .DAT files

OK now copy the .DAT files out onto your desktop and rename them to your TV show.
    So....
If you dropped in 3 lost eps
    AVSEQ01.DAT=Lost Eps 01.DAT
    AVSEQ02.DAT=Lost Eps 02.DAT
    AVSEQ03.DAT=Lost Eps 03.DAT
    And so on......

Now open up toast again and under "Video" tab choose "DVD-Video" and drop in the .DAT files...keep your eye on the little colouerd bar so you know when your DVD is full.
Choose the menu style you want and Goto "File" and "Save As Disk Image"
Once this has encoded you will be able to burn the image to a DVD and watch on your Player

Guys i know that there must be easier ways of getting .avi files onto DVD but this has always worked for me and with my new GigaDesigns 2GHz processor upgrade for my G4 it doesnt take long at all
About 20 mins to encode an episode to VCD then about 1 and a half hours to encode a full DVD

And please dont ask me any hard questions as i dont pretend to be a Encoding whizz...in fact i stumbled upon this by accident
I hope this helps you out
