  1. I am stumped on this one and since nobody has posted on it I can only assume I'm the only one. I'm trying to back up The Skeleton Key. Its a new movie by Universal not sony but I know it has some sort of funky protection. I have tried just about every program that I know without dropping 50 bucks. Here is what I've tried:
First I used dvdshrink 3.2.0.15 and it analysed fine then I chose compressions and it even compressed the movie fine but when it went to burn it got about a third of the way through and gave me the error "illegal disc". I repeated this and got another coaster. since the output files were on my hd I tried to burn these with Nero and again one third of the way through I got the same message "illegal copy" and this was totally different program. When I opened the output files back into shrink it had an error about vts_08_01 or something.
Next I used dvdfabdecrypter version 2.9.5.8 to rip to hd. shrink couldnt open same vts08 error. I then ran the files through vobblanker because I saw that on a post about madagascar. Shrink opened the new files fine but when it went to burn it got partial way through and gave me the illegal copy error.
Also the whole time Im doing this Im running anydvd in the background. it says it is CSS protected and no other protection is showing.
I also tried using plain old dvdfab to make two discs from the hd files and it splits fine. But when I go to burn with Nero it freezes on the writing lead in only to find it has actually burned a third of the disc and died right where it did before.
The only other information I can give is all the versions I'm using are the newest ones available. Also I tried this on both my external downstairs on my laptop and upstairs on my main computer. Two different computers two different burners, same issue. Any ideas?

Do you want to back up the extras aswell or just the main movie?
If you want to back up just the main movie then what I do when I have similar problems to yours is:
Copy main movie files to a different folder
    Open ifoedit
Click create ifo's at the bottom middle of the screen
Navigate to where I copied the main movie files and click on the first one
Then once the ifo's have been created I burn with nero.

    Hope this helps

EDIT: Don't use anydvd and dvdfab decrypter at the same time, they both use different methods of decrypting.

  3. Thanks for the response. I followed your example but the issue recurred. Could you give me any specifics on settings? During the burning process it comes up "illegal copy". Burning this disc should be a piece of cake and im confused why nobody is having the same problem.
This is the first disc Ive ever had issues with, sony arcos no problem.
    Any ideas?
and yes, a backup up the main movie would be just fine.
Remember I tried this on two different computers and two different burners.
One more thing: Can anybody who has successfully backed up this movie let me know how they did it? Just so I know it can be done. Even if its the same ways Ive tried. That will at least let me know I have other issues to resolve and I know its not just the movie but something on my systems.
    Thanks

  4. Have you tried burning with DVDDecrypter?
    Quote Quote
  5. yes Ive tried dvddecrypter and same result. it freezes a third of the way through burning.

I THINK I HAVE MUCH DEEPER ISSUES.

I just tried to backup my old "Brain Candy" movie by Kids in the Hall and guess what this old single layer movie did when I tried to burn it?

Same error message "illegal copy" and I get my 20th coaster. Both my computers are now doing this and it only happened after I tried to make a backup of skeleton key.

Any idea which forum I head to since I now know any movie will do this?

  7. Memorex 4x DVD-R, This is about the 5th 50 pack Ive used of them. I bought like ten of them over a year ago. Never had a problem with them. Whats interesting is it gets to the exact same spot in each one when it fails. Its also half way through the pack and the first half had no problem. I will try opening my last pack and I think I have some cheaper 8x discs I will give a try. Hopefully the media is just bad, thanks for the suggestion.

  8. nope, not the media. Just tried from a different batch and with a different kind of disc. Two computers, two burners and now they both are broken. The only constant is trying to backup skeleton key. Im thinking of just crashing the laptop and reinstalling everything.

  9. Ok, I have another question:
Unable to find a solution I took my wifes laptop and plugged it into my burner and used a basic single layer baby einstein video of mine. I got the same error, illegal disc. So this isolates my issues to either my burner or my discs. it cant be anything on the laptop because I have never used this laptop before and it cant be the programs on the laptop.
I know that the media is fine as I tried it on my upstairs computer, tried discs from a different package and tried a different brand altogether.

Is it possible for a serious windows error to cause damage to my burner? Does the burner itself have a program in it?

    Any ideas?

It's not a software problem it's the writer.
1.Have you updated the firmware in the writer? www.rpc1.org
    2.Does it burn CD's fine?

I agree with MovieGeek, your problem is definitely the Writer.
I too was having problems ripping this One with DvdFab:

"When I opened the output files back into shrink it had an error about vts_08_01 or something.
Next I used dvdfabdecrypter version 2.9.5.8 to rip to hd. shrink couldnt open same vts08 error."

But then I tried DvdDecrypter and Shrink Gave no Grief... No problems during writing sessions at all.

  15. I upgraded all the firmware and no luck. Same burn error. I am cutting and pasting the latest error report with the hope someone can make sense of my issue. It looks like Chinese to me.

1st, edit your Nero key out of your post (top of log file). I noticed you are using an older version of Nero 6, the latest Nero 6 is 6.6.0.16, may be needed for your burner. Your media is questionable also "Disc Manufacturer: CMC MA - G. AF1".

  17. I have updated my version of nero. I have downloaded all firmware updates for my Memorex external burner. No fix to the issue. I searched google for the error messages I listed, illegal disc in nero and in all the forums people listed it nobody was ever able to explain what this error is or how to resolve it. I think my burner is fried.

It cant be the programs because I have tried two different laptops with updated programs and the programs have worked fine on both laptops for the last 6 months.

Its not the media because as I stated above the media works fine on my pc upstairs and I have tried 2 different kinds of media and I have been using this same batch for over a year now.

The burner wont burn dvds or cds. It has to be the burner because the internal burners on both laptops will burn cds just fine but as soon as I try to burn in the external drive it craps out. Also I have been using this external for almost a year now and it stopped working suddenly.

I appreciate everyones help but I dont think there is an answer.

I have just one question hopefully one of you can answer.........whenever I run into a serious issue with my computer that I cant seem to resolve I simply back up my files and crash it. Problem solved and it keeps my computer clean. DOES ANYONE KNOW IF YOU CAN CRASH YOUR EXTERNAL DRIVE SO I CAN START OVER???

I appreciate any help. thanks again and happy thanksgiving.

  18. i dont think you want to crash it, i think you may want to reformat it though...if you said its an external drive, its as simple as going to windows, right clicking on the drive, and formatting it.....my question though, is this, do you have windows booting off that drive??
    Quote Quote
  19. Remember this is an external DVD burner not a HD. I was just wondering if you can reset it completely. There is something wrong with the burner itself whether its the laser or something in the program that is keeping it from working.

I had no probs with Skeleton Key at all.
Ripped the whole movie with DVDDecrypter to HDD first, then ran through
    CloneDVD2.
After that, edited out some unwanted parts with DVDRemake, made an iso
using ImgTool Classic...burn to disc, again using DVDDecrypter...done.
The burner I used was a Pioneer 109.

Stealth however, was another animal...had to use a combination of anyDVD and DVDDecrypter,
    just to rip to HDD.
But after that, everything went fine using the above method, except used Nero Recode instead of
CloneDVD2 to transcode on that one.
Not that one is any better than the other...just decided to try it.
