As someone who is just getting started on this adventure, I've already discovered that there are numerous way/pgms to do some tasks...and due to that, plus having downloaded/installed a tool/pgm that it turns out was already on my system as a sub-set of another, I'm asking: Is there a chart or table format on this site that would show which tools are similar and functions they do? (I don't know enough yet to give a good sample)

    Maybe something formatted like :
    Code:
    Tools for ripping:
    --------------------
    Name: Program A Program B Program C Program D
Task 1 : yes no yes yes
    Task 2 : no via xxx.dll no via zzz.dll
    etc..

    Tools for demux:
    --------------------
    ..similar layout...
(Seems I can't get the sample to format the way I want, but you get the idea, I hope)

What you'll find if you peruse these forums that there are many ways and apps to handle a project. Much will depend on your system as not all apps like each other.

MysticE: It's kinda because of what I've found on these forums that I suggested this...people have their favorites and provide those as solutions to questions, but it's sometimes hard for a new user to realize which apps serve the same basic function...and might duplicate what they aready have...and creating this would need to take input from those familiar with the various applic options...I certainly don't have the skill needed at this time

I'd also suggest a better description of what trialware limitations are in the guides...especially if app has a day limit .vs. limits on function...I'll try a limited function one but not a 15-30 day limited one unless I have to...

The tools section allows you to look for programs by either type of conversion or type of authoring. Not completely comprehensive, but no list is. Some requests are to do some pretty obscure things, so how far do you extend the list of functions to be incorporated ?

As you stated, most people have their favourite software or methods. Some are ingenious, some are long-winded. Each person has a particular way of working, and the workflow of a piece of software or technique needs to match that. The beauty of a place like this is that you will get 10 different answers to your question, covering 10 different methods using 10 different pieces of software. You then get to choose one which will suit not just the task you need to complete, but also the way you like to work.

No simple list can do this.

    Yep, too hard IMO.

Plus, all us "experts" will no longer give opinions, just the canned "read the software list" response to all those "What is the best ...." questions.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I fully understand about the "read the list" replies...just thought that this table might make it easier for someone to determine answer by themselves...as magazines do when they review similar products, as in PC Mag or Consumer Rpts.

For example, the tool category "Video De/Multiplexers" lists 19 tools (I believe)...a matrix showing which supports various inputs/outputs would clarify which tool can do desired task...plus show which app has least/most functions...the text descrip vary enough in content that sometimes it's difficult to tell...

Also, any feedback on the idea to clarify trialware limitations?
