Hi, i have just seen an add for an all in one dvd creator.
Once i have upgraded my pc, i'm lookin to put some old videos onto dvd.

Can i have some opinions on this product, please?? Bear in mind i'm a novice at this task..would this provide a good result?

That looks like one of those scams to me. The tech specs are wrong, and it takes more than a few magic waves of the mouse to make a DVD.

    mats.hogberg...thats a bit disheartening . Though i know where you's coming from.

Ok so presuming a dvd recorder (stand alone or combi with video) could just record directly off the tape to inbuilt HD or directly to the burner?? Job done?? Can it really be as simple as playin the tape into the dvd recorder and it works? What bout shrinking it to fit, if needs be.

Can this not be done with the pc..it already has a burner, i know it'll need to be converted to dvd format (mpeg2 is it..hmm). I wont be wanting to edit films together or anything drastic..just back up individual movies to individual dvds.

Sorry to sound dumb..it's just something i wanna do..and fair enough, the easier the better, right.

just back up individual movies to individual dvds
A DVD Recorder will do this in realtime, generally at a higher quality than you can achieve doing real-time mpeg2 capture to your PC. A DVD Recorder uses hardware to encode. Unless you buy a capture card with mpeg2 encoding for your PC, you will be doing it all in the software, and the quality, generally, is lower (note: there are no absolutes - there are some crappy dvd recorders out there). Again, if you are going to spend the money on a capture card just to do this, buy the dvd recorder instead.

don't be disheartened aweegin, we were all newbs once, it's just that we learn & learn

this Tevion product was a special price item back in March this year

what's Aldi's return policy like? You could always buy one, test it and return it if it's not decent enough quality for what you want. I know Asda have been selling DVD recorders for around £60 also. If your like me and don't mind a little quality suffering then I'd dare say they will do for you

a similar item here (UK store yet it's NTSC format) and the Aldi item is a cheap price for what it is though

IMO..."never" is way to strong a word.
A novice can achieve good, (maybe not best), but good results if they utilize this site and just do a little reading first, (OK a lot of reading, really).

    Research, experiment and ask questions.

Oh...and have fun, 'cause it is

Is it? I think it's a pretty universal statement - No matter how expensive guitar I buy, it'll sound like crap first time I try to play Stairway To Heaven.
No matter how expensive swimming trunks I put on, I'll sink like a stone, first time I try to swim.
No matter if I buy a Lamborghini Murcielago, I won't win the Cannonball race first try.
Everything has to be practiced and learned.

Any time for me....I've never been able to learn

@Mats....I'm sure not trying to argue...
It's just that I rarely, if ever, accept absolutes
I know a guy, picked up a guitar for the first time and within a week or two, could fool people into thinking he had played all his life.

I guess the question is what constitutes a newbie?
I got my first DVD burner last Febuary. Within a few weeks I had transfered some VHS tapes to DVD and the results were "good".
Now, I'm using AVISynth scripts and my results are becoming very good!

All because of guys like you and this forum that have all the information a new guy needs.
Don't underestimate the teaching ability of this site. (And the others also, Doom9, etc.)

Sure don't mean I know a lot Just enough to do what I want so far.

    Have a great day,
    Bob T.

I was just argumenting for the sake of argumenting!
    <rant>
It's just that so many seem to think that, given the right app, the sky is the limit to what they can achieve, without prior knowledge. And if they fail, they start trying to figure out what's wrong with the app they've used.
    </rant>
But like you said, this place is where to start if you're willing to read, learn and listen, and can stand old grunts like me!

Woah!! I agree with mats..we do have to learn..hence why i posted this in the first place..chill guys. 8)

MakemX..I aint disheartened dude, things seldom happen the easy way. I have never bought anything from ALDI of this nature, but on all accounts they are spot on with warranties (3year on most electrical stuff) and returns etc. So maybe, yeah..say what the Hell and give it a go. (the offer dunt start till next week anyways).

I dont know much of dvd recorders..but say i bought a half decent one, will that allow for the compression issue?? I'm aware the best ones to get have the built in hard drive, but like all tech, they are gettin cheaper all the time!

I understand there's always more than meets the eye doin this kinda garb, i just hoped an easy solution would surface (though maybe it already has!). I have converted AVi etc. to dvd on the poota before but it's always been visible where they came from..not like say a 'bought' dvd ya know..i think thats what Mats's gettin at..to make them identical is the art (plus a bigger HD-i got 5gig free at the mo )

If i do buy and try, i'll let thee know.

Still, if ya take it one step at a time and read, read, read...you'll do fine.

Actually, making a DVD that is "as good" as the source tape wasn't that hard to learn....I read everything I could on this site for a couple of weeks, (didn't understand most of it), bought the AverMedia card, found a VCR and went to work.
The "art" of the thing is improving on the original source...expecially a bad source...that's what I'm trying to learn now.

    Later,
    Bob T.
