So I have some pretty great concert dvds with not so great sound. I have much better sounding cds of the same shows. For a newbee, is it REAL hard to sync em up? And what would be the software I would need?
I looked into Sony Vegas & sound forge. The problem is that Sony Vegas only seems to work with captured video, not a dvd file. I definatly don't have a good enough setup for that. It needs to be a program that will do it with a dvd file & is easy enogh for an idiot like me!! Thanks

You can do it with Vegas, although it's not easy. I believe the current version (6.0c) allows you to drop VOBs onto the timeline, although I haven't tried it.

I did a similar exercise not long ago with a doco/event film called Red Hot and Blue from the early 90's. The only source I had was an NTSC VHS with OK video but very bad audio. I was able to clean up the audio enough for the breif dialogue sections, but the music was a disaster. I used the music from the CD recording to replace most of the music audio. Unfortunately, 2 tracks had very different recordings on the CD to the videos used in the film.

I found Vegas to be the perfect tool, as you can see the wave form of the audio along side the video, and use that to help line things up. It is still time consuming, requiring frame by frame positioning of the audio to get it right. I do a fair bit of audio editing, so I have gotten used to working like this, but it still took several hours to sync up around 10 tracks to the video.

I would suggest you start by demuxing the video, and worst case converting it to DV, which vegas prefers. Grab just the video for a couple of tracks and see if you think it will be worth the time and effort required. The satisfaction is great when you get it done right though.

Demuxing is the process for extracting the video and audio from the VOB files into seperate files for further processing. There is no quality loss when doing this. Have a look at rejig as one possible tool.
