  1. Hi Everyone,

I'm making a visit to New York City at the beginning of December with my wife and was wondering if anyone has any good suggestions for places/shops to visit for the following items,

I'm a bit of a techie/gadget freak and I'm looking to maybe buy the following items,

    1) Digital camera

    2) Memory cards

    3) Ipod/MP3 player

    4) Casio G-shock watch

    5) And anything else that looks techie or gadgety enough to interest me !!

I'm told by several people who have already been to New York, that stuff can be considerably cheaper than here in the UK.
So any suggestions for where I can save money on these types of items would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

Be very careful of buying stuff from the "Grey Market" electronic stores in NYC. I have seen numerous documentaries about how these guys scam. Reconditioned stuff, charging up to $100 for cables/adaptors that are supposed to come with the stuff.

Stay away or you'll be sorry. You would be better off ordering the stuff online from a reputable US site and having it shipped to your hotel while your there. You will not likely have to pay state sales tax(NY is quite high). Not having to pay tax would cover shipping costs.

I agree with Gee. There are so many 'hole-in-the-wall' type electronic stores that tend to prey on those who dont know any better that it isnt funny, with the exception of B&H Photo and Video which are very reputable. Like the Dr said you can buy your items online from trusted sources, of course depending on how long you plan to visit NY.

Hope you enjoy your visit here in the states next month though be wary, it may most likely be cold since winter is coming here.

This stuff can even be ordered online before you leave and sent to the hotel ahead of your arrival. Hotels will hold this stuff for you and you can pick it up when you get there. Just contact ahead of time to make sure it is cool. 8)

If you already know what it is that you want, then ordering online and having it shipped to the hotel sounds like a killer idea. If you happen to find a better deal in a brick and motar shop then you can return the mail order stuff if the savings is good enough. I have never been to B&H but that was the first thing I was going to say before I read it further down. A bit of a warning or confession anyway, I am not the person to be taking shopping advise from. I like to hold something in my hands before I buy it and am often to eager or lazy to go around hunting a lower price on an item.
IS IT SUPPOSED TO SMOKE LIKE THAT?

If you go to NYC without seeing FAO Schwartz that close to Christmas, YOU SHOULD BE SHOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's only one thing you need to know about rude people in NYC.................... !

Don't let it get to you. It's almost like someone tipping a hat to you as you get used to it.

Sorry for my ignorance but what is FAO Schwartz ??

Thanks for the advice you are giving me guys.

I've heard a lot about 'Grey' imports and other dodgy stuff, and I'm quite well up on my techie stuff.
I tend to do a lot of research before I buy something gadgety so I tend to know what to expect to pay for it before I commit to buying.

Keep the suggestions coming fellas, let me know as many store names as you can so I can check them out on the net prior to visiting.

Maybe you could also let me know any special events or places I could visit whilst there - I arrive on the 9th of December and I'm there for 5 days so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

    Hey, I moved west.

Funny thing is, when I meet other fellow New Yorkers out here, it's like we're the best of buds. New Yorkers are only rude to each other in their Home State. Like I said, a wave of the finger becomes like a tip of the hat to someone as you get used to it. It's becomes almost like a compliment. You'd probably be worse off if someone doesn't give you the courteous flip off. You'll be wondering, "What the Hell is his problem?" :P

Yeah FAO Schwartz is a fancy toy store, but it's pretty cool to check out around the Holidays. The Empire State Building WILL BE CROWDED!!!!!!!!!! It always is, but during the holidays it will be worse.

    Enjoy your trip.

I just saw something on tv Fri night about Best Buy accepting prices from these grey market stores. i.e.-you buy what you want at best buy and bring proof of lower prices from the small places. Best Buy makes up the difference and you have a product from the more reputable store. Check first but I thought it was the jist of it.
