I ran some PI/PO tests on Verbatim DataLifePlus Advanced AZO 8x DVR-R (MCC02RG20) made in Taiwan and the results were very dissapointing, in almost all cases worse than any other media I tested. I though that these were considered good. Should I return the media back and get something else instead?

In Europe, you may have gotten fakes. Over there, in a number of countries, Verbatim packaging and branding is being faked, in addition to the MCC codes being stolen and fake.

Check the stamper serial number which is located on the dye side of the disc on the dye-colored ring around the plastic hub area and post it here; that will let us know if it is faked or not. Also, it may be pretty hard to read but the serial number etched into the clear hub area will be useful in determining which manufacturer made the discs.

Those are genuine MCC discs then. They were made in Taiwan by CMC Magnetics using Mitsubishi processes. You didn't mention what burner you had and the firmware level so it's hard to say if the discs are bad or not.

PI/PO tests also don't mean much. Those are not an end-all be-all sort of test to disc quality.

I returned to the shop as much discs as I could and got some Verbatim DVR+R 16x Certified (MCC004) instead, hoping that these are better.

Hmm, a Pioneer should be rocking with Mitsubishi 8x DVD-R. I guess you just got a bad batch. In general Pioneer burners like DVD-R a bit better than DVD+R. I have a batch of MCC004 that don't burn so well on my DVR-A09 but my Sony DRU-810A (rebranded BenQ DW1640) just loves them, while conversely my 16x Verbatim DVD-Rs burn much better on the A09.

I will probably burn the DVD+R using a LG GSA-4163B to also set the bitsetting to DVD-ROM.

Verbatim DVDs have 2 codes. MCC and CMC. Most are MCC's.

How can I check if the ones I bought are fake?

Verbatim has MPN for all products.

Or if you see rebate for verbatim (verbatim runs by verbatim), that's the genuine verbatim dvd.

You can get best price from cdrdvdrmedia.com.

I've not seen CMC media in several years now under a Verbatim brand name.

In Europe CMC has shown up lately under the Verbatim label as "Pearl White" 8x DVD+R or somesuch. You're right about the US though, hasn't been any CMC-code Verbatim DVD media since the 2x/2.4x days IIRC, though that's unfortunately not true when it comes to CD-R media.
