My DVD burner is a Toshiba Sd-R5272, which is suppose to be a 8X burner. When I use either Alcohol 120% or Nero, the burning speed have been set to be "maximum". I just realized that both programs have been burning at only 4X speed on these DVD+R that says "8X" on them, so far all burned copies have resulted in failure. So I am guessing a 8X blank has to be burned at 8X. I know some of you are going to suggest force setting burn speed at 8X, but that option is not even available for Alcohol 120% for some reason. I checked Toshiba's web site and could not find any updated drivers. Ideas?

Have you been able to burn any of those DVDs at 8X? Tried other burning software besides the two mentioned? What media are you using?
-
no I have not been able to burn at 8X, neither Nero or Alcohol 120% even has that option under speed. I am welcome to suggestion as to which other software I should try. I am not entirely sure what you meant by the media I am using, did you mean the DVD+R I used? Interestingly, I tried a DVD+RW burned at 4X with Nero, and it worked ok.

One of the most common reasons for this is that your burner doesn't recognize the type of media that you are using. You might go to the drive manufacturer's web site and download the latest firmware revision for your drive. As new media comes out, the drive manufacturers update their firmware to recognize the new media.

I already installed the most recent drive from 2004 but it made no difference. I found the driver "off site", i.e. no drivers were available from Toshiba's office web site.
Can I not burn 8X DVD+R disc at just 4X speed? -
It sounds like you are in big company with this problem. Check out these comments on the drive https://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters.php?DVDnameid=238&Search=Search&list=#featuresandcomments
Drives are so cheap these days you may want to buy a new drive. It's not worth the hassle to screw around with your drive. -
Try the 4X speed. Many discs rated at 8X or 16X won't burn at the maximum speed. The Ritek made Fuji and Maxell +R 8X will only burn at 4X according to DVD Decryptor.
Drives may be cheap in the USA but where I am a new one will still cost me $80 - $150CAD. Too much for my budget this week... -
Are these good discs? Read www.nomorecoasters.com
