    Hi there,

My PC has developed a problem whereby it will no longer play back .avi or .mpg video clips – or rather it does play them back, as there is audio and the time line moves, but the preview window is black throughout. This is rather infuriating, as I can’t do any video editing (I’ve got Canopus Let’s Edit) or even watch short clips in Photoshop taken on my normal digital camera.

Until yesterday the problem also affected all internet video clips (e.g. BBC news; media player web content; etc.), however since downloading some Codecs (I’m still not sure exactly what these are) as advised elsewhere, this part of the problem seems to be solved. But I still can’t view any of my own .avi or .mpg videos!

Does anyone have any ideas what my problem might be? Thanks.

Load your files into GSpot to see what codecs they require. I find it hard to believe though that it's "just" a codec problem. Try opening a couple of the files in virtualdub - if it can open them, then codecs are not your problem. Also try Media Player Classic or VLC - that will tell you if it's just Windows Media Player with the problem.
    If in doubt, Google it.
