Ok Im new to video conversion.

How would I encode an MPEG4 into a format that will play in most or any DVD players. I've searched through the forum while my account was being activated but to no avail. I know nothing about this sort of thing.

Maybe someone could give me a lynk to a program to use, and some stater tips.

VSO DivxtoDVD (comes in freeware and payware versions) does a pretty good job and requires little to no experience.

If you want to get higher quality, then a more hands-on, manual approach using a number of tools is required. http://members.dodo.com.au/~jimmalenko/AVI2DVD.htm shows you one approach.

What kind of MPEG4? Drop it into Gspot and see what codec it uses.

Then you can look at the guides listed under 'Convert' to the left.<<<< to see what is needed to convert it. Also look under 'What is' DVD. It will tell about the DVD format and what the specs are.

For a DVD, you would have to encode it with a program like TMPGEnc encoder to MPEG-2 format, then author it with a program like TMPGEnc DVD Author to DVD format, then burn to DVD.

Lots of other programs can do this also.

Or to make it easy, try VSO DivxToDVD. If it accepts the video, it does most of the work, but at a reduced quality compared to the above method.

anytime i need to create a v/sv/dv-cd i always swear by tmpgenc and nero. although nero can encode the video as well, I would highly recommend you DONT do it because it really gives lackluster results. as long as you encode the video correctly in tmpgenc, nero will see that and just do a straight burn of the mpg file. add to that the fact that nero can create atleast some basic menu's makes it a pretty good combo.

I tried to use TMPEGnc, and it wouldnt open the file. Am I doing something wrong here? What format will play in a DVD player. Also the other programs didnt seem to want to open the file either.

Im sorry to trouble you people but the explanations given above are a little complex even to me. The file just says MPEG. I tried TMPEGnc and GSpot and dont really understand them. I guess Im looking for a simple way to just burn it to a DVD so I can watch it on my TV instead of computer.

you need to install the codec of the avi in order to playit on your pc ... you will also need to have the codec installed to convert it ... use GSpot to find what codec you need then download and install that codec ... now you can convert it to dvd compliant Mpegs (TMPGenc 3 xpress is very easy to use) and then author it to dvd (i use TMPGenc dvd author) ... there are many programs available to convert your avi and to author the resultant mpegs to dvd so you dont have to use the ones i've suggested ... have a look in the tools section and find the programs that suit you.
