I am using a Sony TRV-480 Which I Recently purchased. I quickly recorded some stuff on it to see how it all works....
I recorded approx. 5 minutes of me and friends messing around the yard etc. I hooked up the firewire to my AIW 8500DV. at first everything seemed to be working fine...
I attempted using the software that came with it to capture with. seemed to work fine. but at the moment i was confused about the idea that when you capture it like that it is raw data... i was looking for some kind of software that would capture it straight to .avi or something...
after all that i found that using the software that came with it was best becuase for some reason WinDV doesnt detect the firewire anymore or atleast for now. So I get it all captured and it all seems fine. So I decide to use TMPGEnc 3.0 XPress to convert it to .avi so i can then convert it to xvid or divx. I tried using virtualdubmod but it kept coming up with errors. After TMPGEnc 3.0 XPress was finished converting it to this...
(AVI file (Uncompressed RGB, 720x480, 29.97 fps / Uncompressed PCM, 32000 Hz, 16 bit, 2 ch (stereo)))
everything seems great except the audio is real choppy and is almost undescribable. I read in these forums where you could change the bitrate of the audio but i looked thru the TRV-480 and the only choice i could find was 16 or 32.
any ideas on the sound ??

Get another IEEE-1394 card. The 8500DV port has had problems.

I also just installed the panasonic dv codecs, which allowed for virtual dub to open the raw dv file but it still says it can not extract audio from this interleaved stream

Well, I have messed with it all night now and I believe I have it all figured out. I have made a successful video and here is how I did it.
I captured it with the software that came with the Sony TRV-480
After installing the Panasonic DV Codecs I opened up the RAW DV with VirtualDub
I then set VirtualDub up with resizing, deinterlacing, etc etc.
It WOULD NOT accept lame codecs for some wierd reason so I used anotther mp3 codec that was already on my system too.
After it was finished I watched the video with satisfaction.

Transferring DV from a digital cam is probably about the simplest thing you can do, it's essentially like copying a file. There should be no problems with the file.
