First of all, you may be asking: WTH would I want to go from divx/xvid to wmv? well, its a long, drawn out, and complicated situation.

anyways, I already have windows media encoder 9 (have had it for a while. great help especially when encoding small videos for web usage. the progressive download is great). but the few times ive tried, it gives me weird errors when trying to convert. the pc upstairs I tried and it told me it had corrupt or invalid data. it has the xvid codec. this computer has the regular divx codec and it decided to crash WME halfway through the encode.

any ideas for a hassle free transcode?

What compression (codec) does the file actually use ?

I couldn't find it in your first post.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  5. Your first mistake is using WME 9. It is pure crap. Do you have a copy of TMPG Express? That will allow you to convert to WMV fairly easily.

nvm. I figured out the problem in the middle of the night last night. apprently WME desotn like "off-brand" mpeg4 codecs. installed the official divx codec on both machines and theyve been working double duty all day re-encoding these videos. nothing but smooth sailing.

edit: I should also mention that I doublechecked the main computer (the one i said had the divx codec earlier) and it actually had 3ivx on it for whatever reason.

  7. Good to hear. Glad WME isn't crashing/locking up on you. I could never get it to work properly. It's extremely picky with codecs. Forget using VOB's with it.

thanks. normally I would be using a better program such as virtualdub or tmpgenc for this, but this is one of those special situations where I need to use WME. cuz when all this encoding is said and done, its all getting loaded onto a windows media server for streaming purposes
