What first comes to mind is how far are you from the router, are there a lot of walls, and is there a lot of metal between you and the router.

All these can impair the signal.

Also, a 2.4 GHz cordless phone can have a detrimental affect as well.

Are you using 802.11b or 802.11g wireless? G is significantly better than B when it comes to range and transmission speeds. 54 Mps for G as opposed to 11 Mps for B.

Right. As long as your signal isn't horrible between the computer and the router its not a wireless problem 9 times out of 10. How fast is your 2mb adsl plugged directly into the router via a cable?

This may seem obvious, but be very sure to read the book that came with your router. My wireless router had some odd quirks that gave detrimental results used wrongly. I read the book and had no problems after that.

I have a "B" router for my ancient laptop, but it works great, even through about 6 walls 100 feet or more away. Through a cordless phone on one of the walls too. Could be good luck, but either way, it works fine.

Most wireless routers have RJ45 jacks in the back for a wired connection. Why aren't you using that? I would. You get a faster and much more reliable connection.

Yeah if its right by the router then quoted for extra truth.

  8. Try plugging modem directly into PC and test speed. Also test with wired connection on router and test speed.

Unless you have some ungodly kind of interference the wireless part should not be a problem.

Some G series wireless routers have problems if WEP is turned on.
