  1. I have a question. Does anybody out there cut there XVCDs into scenes.

I am editing 90 minutes of PAL Home Video which is encoded at 1554 KB/s (60 minutes of video per 80 minute CD and compatible with VCDImager), which turns out to be a 1.2GB file.

I've completely read through this topic:

Questions for those cutting/editing mpegs using next's AIW hack (http://www.vcdhelp.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?topic=47668&forum=4).

    The final suggestions were:

Tmpgenc - Great at the beginning of the file, but as you move through the file, it takes longer and audio/video gets more out of sync.

Chopper - Cuts good XVCD, but is completley impossible to make an accurate cut.

VcdCutter - Cuts good XVCD, fiddly and as you move through the file the scene marker is more and more out of step ( Could probably work with this once I worked out the problems).

    Vcd Kutter (Linux) - C%$£.

DVTool - Cuts good XVCD, inaccurate cutting.

Myflix, Easy to use, wants to re-encode everything at 1120 Kb/s

M1 Edit, iFilmEdit, OK, but again wants to re-encode everything at standard VCD rates.

Can anybody offer any other suggestions that could help me solve this issue and let me, and my parents overseas start enjoying my home videos again.

    Cheers

    Richard

  2. I am not too sure what exactly happens with MYFlix. If you save with the vcd extension the file does turn out to be 1.15 bit rate VCD compliant even though the original file is XVCD. I haven't played around with it enough to determine if the end result is an improvement in quality over a simple 1.15 capture. The program will take an advanced bit rate XVCD capture and edit it down to VCD compliancy in minutes. There doesn't appear to be any reencoding involved but the end result is compliant.

If the quality is an improvement over a simple 1.15 capture it may be a satisfactory compromise. I'll play around with it a bit.

By the way I have been able to run a file through Chopper after I edit it and burn a bin using VCDImager. I simply do my edits and run the resulting file through Chopper. It's simply an edit in Chopper from the beginning of the file to the end of the file. Takes minutes. Although it works for me I have heard that it doesn't work for others. The process still retains the advanced bit rates of XVCD.

  3. I don't see the conversion happening with MyFlix3, so I figure I'm doing something different.

I have a 45 minute home movie I put into a MPEG1 stream (VBR) at 1820 Kbps. After cutting several pieces out of it (and saving each seperately for burning as a Nero menu), the bit rate of each cut still averaged in the 1750 Kbps range, and the peaks were the same for each clip as they were before cutting with MyFlix3.

Granted, I'm not saving with a "vcd" extension, and that may be the magic pill. But it seems that you are wanting to keep your XVCD as a non-standard file. Mine play great and stay in sync (audio-video) if I just save as a .mpg

The purists out there may not agree with me, but my movies look better than theirs. Plus I'm never going to buy a DVD player that can't read my CDs, so why both scrunching it down to VCD? Save it as an mpg, and unless I missed something, you shouldn't lose your higher bitrate.

You are correct. If you don't save with a vcd extension it doesn't resample it. I've done many an XVCD with it and it worked fine and the resulting mpeg was the same sample rate as it was before the cut.

  5. Dward - I could not have said it better myself.

  6. Dward,
Thank you, I missed that, wish all software was as easy to use as MyFlix.

The only slight problem is where VCDimager is now coming back with the following:

++ WARN: mpeg scan: pack header code (0x000001ba) expected, but 0x000001b9 found (buflen = 4)
++ WARN: bad packet at packet #1255 (stream byte offset 916620) -- remaining 4 bytes of stream will be ignored

But my VCD Player and DVD (Mico A-980) is happy with the files, so no complaints here.

    BTW,

    Thanks again

    rmotters

P.S. The Aussies do it again (Sorry Poms!)
