I associated my VOB files with DVDDecrypter but now would like to un-associate them with any program.

When I open up the OPEN WITH window, there is no choice for not having it open with no program at all. It seems that once you associate it with a certain program you can only associate it with another one.

    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Did you look in 'Tools>Folder Options>File Types'? You should be able to delete or change any file type there. Do this from any open folder.

Thanks. I did as you said in Tools and deleted the file type so it's not associated with any prog. now. The DVDDecrypter icon remains though. Not a big deal.

But I'd like to change the file type to try to import it into Windows Movie Maker. Is their a way to do that?

I don't think WMM can import VOBs directly and I wouldn't do it even if it could. Decrypter is still there because it can read VOBs directly.

But if you really want to:

Then you can import the MPEGs.

I wondering what your final product is?

Oh, all I want to do is transfer some family video I burned onto DVD's from VHS tapes to a stand alone Panasonic DVD Recorder.

I just have raw video and now that I just got a new high end system with Windods Movie maker, I want to import the video files into it for editing, effects etc.

The VHS tapes are the full sized ones and the camera doesn't function anymore so i can't just import them like i can with recent hi8 tapes that I use with my new palm camera via USB.

I'm a newbie for sure and don't really want to get into encoding and authoring if i can help it so I'm just looking for the least expensive and trouble free way to accomplish this.

All signs point to another program I'll have to download that changes the DVD files into avi's that Windows Movie Maker likes.

They should give a Nobel Prize to the person that developes a program that does it all with all the codecs, and extensions that are in the universe so it's easy on the novice.

    Thanks for all your help.

Well, then, I might be able to make it a little easier. You have the VHS tapes converted to DVD format with a DVD recorder. You want to edit them, maybe filter and make transitions. Then encode back to DVD format, author and burn. At least I think that's what you meant.

You really need a MPEG editor, which WMM is not. Low cost editors I favor are MPEG-VCR or the freeware Cuttermaran. These are just editors, and don't really do much for adding transitions.

If you look in 'Tools', you will see the basic and advanced MPEG editors. The advanced ones are a bit pricey for what you want to do. Unfortunately, MPEG is not as easy to edit as some AVIs and you have some risk of audio/video sync loss. MPEG-VCR and Cuttermaran handle it fairly well with minimal chance of sync loss.

If you convert the VOBs to WMM via AVI, to WMV format, then back to MPEG VOBs again, you will have a lot of conversion losses. Best to stay in the original MPEG format if possible.

But, if you do decide to use WMM, I would convert the VOBs to DV video. WMM can use that, and it can also output as DV video. You would have to reencode the edited DV video back to MPEG-2 for DVD uses, then author and burn it.

You will have to get into encoding and authoring if you want to produce a DVD, but it's not that bad.

Others here may have better suggestions, but those are my thoughts.

EDIT: From another post I saw mention of: https://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=Ulead_Videostudio

It might be a little simpler. They have a trial version.

Yes, your right on the mark. It's a simple thing I want to.

I'll investigate both programs you mentioned. WMM can burn DVD's that work on stand alone players very well. I did 2 family events so far and I was pleased with WMM even though it is sorely limited compared to something like Adobe. However as they say the price is right.

WMM gives you the option of burning a large file in NTSC for quality or DV-AVI. I've chosen the large NTSC file so it will play on any stand alone (hopefully) and it's worked on 3 different DVD recorders so far. Not too shabby considering all the problems I read people have on this site.

I imagine DV-avi is also good for computer viewing but most family members stop at having just a DVD player. No one is into monkeying around with video except me.

    Regards
