I can't play or rip a dvd-rw on my computer made with Panasonic EH50 dvd recorder. When finalized the dvd plays fine on other dvd players, just not on my computer. I have Philips 1640 dvd writer.

Did you use VR mode or DVD VIDEO mode when you recorded this DVD-RW? Also make sure you finalize it on the stand alone DVD recorder before taking it to the computer for ripping.
You always want to use DVD VIDEO mode if you intend to RIP it to the computer later on. VR mode does not work very well as it tends to use non-standard DVD VIDEO resolutions.

In the user manual of my Panasonic it says Dvd-rw is written in Dvd-video format.
I finalized the dvd afterwards.
Thats why its playable on other stand alone dvd players.
Neither windows explorer, rippers like dvd decrypter or players like powerdvd can read it. -
That's really strange my friend!
Hopefully someone else will come by with an idea ... I'm stumped!

*** EDIT ***
One last thought ... you have a Philips DVD burner if I am reading your first post in this thread correctly. If so that is geared towards DVD+R and DVD+RW so maybe it can't read your DVD-RW disc?"The eyes are the first thing that you have to destroy ... because they have seen too many bad things" - Lucio Fulci

Asssuming that there is no CSS (or other encryption) involved, you may try the following:
Copy the vob file(s) from your dvd to your harddisk (just with the windows explorer or another file manager).
Rename the file(s) to mpg and try to play them
If that works, you may demux, cut, join, reauthor or do whatever you like with them.GUI for dvdauthor:

My philips can handle dvd-rw cause they work fine if i use blanks.
It seems my computer just can't read dvd-rw's formatted on my Panasonic.
As for copying the files from dvd to harddisk. Thats just the problem.
Windows explorer can't read the disc.
It says the disc is not formatted and not compatible with windows.
I even asked microsoft when i read this article http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;899527
The hotfix didn't solve it -

You may find that you either need to use another brand of DVD-RW or you need a new DVD-ROM or DVD BURNER for the computer.

Isobuster can read my dvd when i do a search for missing files and folders. Its in the folder with files found via their signature.
This however only works when the dvd isn't finalized.
Extracting the files is only possible with the registered version.
The problem is definitely not related to my burner or media.
I'll try the dvd on a different computer but i don't think that will solve it -
I tried the dvd on a laptop and it played fine.
My guess is the problem is my computer or dvd drive.
Although i doubt its the drive, its only a year old and can read other pc formatted dvd-rw's just fine.
When i use dvd decrypter it says
UDF File System Parsing Failed
udffindpartition returned 0
In windows explorer the dvd folder appears empty -
As I have assumed...
I think the only way to find it out is testing another DVD drive in your computer and/or testing your DVD drive in another computer.GUI for dvdauthor:

I had this error occur just this week after 6 months of successful rips by my HP dvd640e Lightscribe burner from discs recorded by my Panasonic ES30VS. Now I don't know if it's the Panny or the HP dvd640e giving up, or dust, or overuse?
The DVD plays and rips fine in my other internal dvd burner. So it's the combination of the ES30VS and dvd640e in my case as far as a can tell.
Anyway, tonight I ejected the disc, placed it back in the drive a 2nd time, and it played and ripped fine. Conclusion? Jiggle it a little!!! -
I only have one dvd writer in my computer so i can't try that.
I made a few dvd-rw discs but the message keeps appearing in windows explorer (disc not compatible with windows).
My dvd writer however will accept dvd-rw if they are formatted on the computer with nero.
I tried the discs on a laptop and there they play just fine.
It seems my philips 1640 writer doesn't recognize panasonic formatted discs. Or my computer isn't setup properly
