  1. I've done lots of frameserving with DVD2AVI, but whenever I used VirtualDub it was simply to make a new .avi with my desired settings. I tried using it tonight to frameserve for the first time, and despite following every guide, making sure I have all necessary files installed, etc, it does... nothing. The little window where it shows the number of frames processed just sits at "0" and there's no activity. Any idea what could be wrong? I've read and re-read the guides posted on this site, and it just won't do anything. I'm using VirtualDub 1.5 and Windows XP. Thanks.

Also tried VirtualDub mod, with the same result.

Well, I'm confused. Normally frameserving does not do anything visible.
You open your encoder and select the .vdr file from the VD frameserver and then it loads the VD file into your encoder. You encode with that.

If you are using frameserving to create a new AVI, you would need an AVI encoder that would accept the frameserve output. Never tried that.

  3. Never mind, figured it out myself. I was thinking the frameserver did something before I tried to open the vdr, like DVD2AVI does, but now I realize it does absolutely nothing until you start your mpg encoding. Duh.

Vdub frameserving is not the same as DVD2AVI. Follow redwudz's advice, leave the frameserver running and just open the vdr file with your encoder.

I had exactly the same problem years ago when trying to frameserve with Vdub, I thought it would do something like DVD2AVI but no.

DVD2AVI does something? The d2v file just sits there.

  7. What VCDHunter and I meant by DVD2AVI "doing something" is that you have to wait a minute or two for it to finish making the d2v file, and you see the progress of that in the stats window. So I was waiting for VirtualDub to finish making its vdr file, and thinking it wasn't doing anything because the frames all stayed on zero. The guide I read said to leave the window open until it's finished encoding, and for a time I mistakenly thought that meant until the vdr file is finished. Unlike DVD2AVI, no progress was showing, so I thought the file wasn't being made.

That is DVD2AVI indexing the mpg. The equiv I guess would be when you open an ogm or mkv with VirtualDubMod. Strickly speaking it has nothing to do with frameserving. That starts after the indexing is complete and you load the d2v as a source.
