Greetings, fellow encoders.
I've got a set of DVDs (extracted .vob files actually) that i'm trying to convert to AVI for use on my Philips DVP642 dvd player. I've been using ffmpegx to encode to Xvid with mencoder (files encoded with ffmpeg won't play for some reason).
The main problem I'm running into is, while the image quality is generally very good, the motion is noticeably jerky, especially while panning or during other kinds of large-scale movement. The ffmpegx progress info shows that the encoder is frequently skipping frames, which I don't understand since i've selected the same framerate as the source (NTSC FILM).
I've tried increasing the bitrate and toggling various options to no effect. i even tried to change the framerate (to NTSC) and that just caused audio / video sync issues.
Any ideas from the experts? The Mac-related resources for the DVP642 are quite sparse.
Thanks.

Well, I worked it out myself and I hope someone might find it useful. Actually, I never did solve the problem directly, but to work around it, I had to convert the .VOB files to DV using FFmpegX's present. From there it was flawless to encode to Xvid and the files look great on the DVP642.
