    I'm greeted with this nonsense:
Sorry but only users granted special access can read topics in this forum
Now we can't read topic here as registered users? I can understand moving off-topic away from public passers-by...but this seems a little childish.

This usually happens when a topic is locked or moved to moderator only forums because of it's content. It is no longer appropriate for general membership viewing at that point.

  4. I was logged in at the time.

And since when is NEWS topics a mod only topic?

  5. Geez man. Let the mods be mods.

What was the original topic. Maybe it was a double post or another thread already on the topic. It was locked for a reason by the mods. It is no longer in NEWS as it has been moved.

The Specific topic moved by other mods to the closed topic section.
The reason is that It turned to something beyond news after a while. Someone decided to move it there and we have to respect this (including me)
    La Linea by Osvaldo Cavandoli

  8. It WAS a valid topic and newsworthy. Shame I didn't get a chance to finish reading it.

The mods can be mods if they will. Why not remove the offending posts or do what it takes to bring it back on-topic instead of killing an interesting discussion.

Yeah if its moved to closed topic (deleted to most people) and the mod forgets to uncheck the "leave shadow topic box it causes this to happen.

It's still a great place. Best on the net. Just weird stuff going on in the past year or so with lots of familiar "faces" getting upset and leaving or being forced out.
I think we needed a closed area for long term members to vent and discuss anything they wanted away from newbs. Something like an OT of OT which would never be locked/closed but only for long term active members who have a vested emotional interest in this site. Just to stop stuff from spilling over into the other forums and causing so many closed topics.
This is not about taking sides but I hate to see good , helpful people leave because they are upset.

  15. There was a total over-reaction to something I posted a few months back and I got a 'warning'. After that I said I wouldn't continue posting and this is only my second post since then. I just want to make the point that over-zealous mods DO drive people away, to the deteriment of the site. Before that I was happy to post the odd message trying to help people. It's the site's loss.

  16. I'm usually quiet on here. I learn a lot from reading the posts and know I can get real answers when I need to know something. But when I return to a News topic only to find it has vanished followed by locking 'goodbye' thread...something's seriously wrong.
So wrong the forum has lost a resource (Adam.) I'm all for fewer lawyers; but on the site where the law is a critical part of discussions, having a lawyer on-hand giving free advice is very nice.
I don't like seeing what's been happening happen.

    who's going to determine that?
Better not to lock threads for some of the reasons they are locked. Like the news post that has vanished. Why not delete bad posts instead of killing something valid. Because the mods are lazy or stubborn or both? It's the same as a kid taking his toys home so others can't play.
This site is used by professionals, semi-pros, and adults mostly (from what I can tell) but the actions on here are adolescent.

Really I'm just upping my Closed Topics % as I think this thread will go the same way:

    If in doubt, Google it.

Yes. I have great respect for Adam. His posts were always worth a careful read, or second read. I thought he called things as he saw them, yet he was always patient in explaining points of law. Of course, his contributions were not limited to that. Too bad.
    Pull! Bang! Darn!
