This seems to be a regular issue, but I can't ascertain a solution from previous postings.

I'm evaluating ffmpegX on a 10.4.3 PowerBook with Toast 6, Popcorn (patched for Tiger) and MTR.

I have some DivX AVI files that I've tried to encode to DVD. The files do not play in QuickTime, but do so fine in mplayer - I don't believe I have an easy route to AC3 audio codec support for QuickTime, due to DivX incompatabilities with Tiger 10.4. Encoding with defaults for either mpeg2enc DVD (with mplayer filter selected) or ffmpeg DVD works fine (the VIDEO_TS folder is created). However I get no audio in the playback, either from pointing DVD Player at the VIDEO_TS directory or (just in case) burning the image with Toast.

As a workaround I encoded the AVI files to mov with DivXDoctor, which worked fine - the QuickTime movies of the converted AVI's play with audio fine. They also burn to DVD with Toast, albeit incredibly slowly, with poor image quality, and poor use of the 4.7GB available.

Then I transferred the raw AVI's to my wifes laptop PC and ran her Cucusoft AVI/MPEG to DVD converter Pro (something I don't particularly like doing as I'm a dedicated Apple user). This worked fine - either converting and burning straight to DVD, or allowing me to create the VIDEO_TS directory, copying the lot to the Mac over Samba and burning with Toast (in addition it also worked with Nero). The resultant DVD's play fine with audio working.

So I suspect I'm not selecting the right audio codec or settings for audio for the conversion in ffmpegX. It is defaulting to AC3 (which I suspect is a non-starter) or it may simply be that I am accepting the wrong defaults.

Anyone any idea of a strategy I should pursue to resolve this snag?

    thanks

  2. Try to encode by using "DVD ffmpeg" and disable "Normalize audio". In that way, Quicktime will be entirely bypassed in decoding the source audio.

Thanks for the (speedy) response. I will give it a try this evening (UK-time).

That did the trick. DVD player plays the encoded output when pointed to the VIDEO_TS directory - and with perfect audio. I'll cut a DVD tonight.

Better get myself a PayPal account - $15 is a ridiculously small amount for the features in this suite of apps.

thanks once again major for a terrific tool

I'm having this same problem. I'm new to ffmpegx and having problems figuring it out.

I have tried encoding using DVD ffmpeg and disabling "Normalize Audio" but still when I point DVD Player to the Video.ts folder there is no audio.

Also, the .avi files I am tring to convert are only around 350mb, but seem to be taking up almost all of a 4.7gb disc when I drop them in Toast.

Can anyone recommend a way of reducing the file size, and a way to get my audio back.

Sorry if all this sounds really dumb, but I'm new to all this yet eagar to learn.

    Cheers
