Today (11-7-05) I purchased a LiteOn LVW-5115GHC+ at Costco for $130. I downloaded the latest firmware listed for it from LiteOn's website (LNMPU018.DA3). I ran Mr. Wizard's Ilohacker 1.5b on it. http://ilohacker.tripod.com/index.htm It found the macrovision and region code sections and modified the file. I am nervous about installing it. I've emailed Mr. Wizard for his opinion. Has anyone else installed the modified firmware yet? If I get to feeling courageous I will go ahead and install it and report back.
So far it has played just about every file I have thrown at it. (WMAs, MP3s, MPG2s, and different flavors of MPG4s. Some of my SVCDs have had a bit of trouble when they have gone past 45 minutes. It also played a mini DVD, but the menus didn't work.
It doesn't have SVCD input; I will compare it's recording quality to recordings made on my 5005. I will report my findings after a few more days of experimenting.
I also appreciate that the full file name is displayed during MP3 file playback. I try to keep them short so I'm not sure if a really long name would be displayed. It also will play wma's and mp3s off of DVDs.

This model will have a $40 off coupon on NOV 25-27th @ Costco. Costco will honour the coupon if you go back on those days and give you $40 back if you bought it within 30 days. At $90 this unit might not be a bad deal . ;-}

Has anyone applied the Macrovision hack on this machine (Liteon LVW-5115GHC+). If so, what are the results? And how does this machine stack up against the Lite-on LVW-5105 and LVW-1101? The $90 price at Costco is tempting -- unless the machine is a piece of crap.

I'm also wondering if anyone has had success with the MV hack on this model.
I saw this on another forum:

I haven't had great luck with DIVX/MPEG4 - not all of them play and after a week, it quit reading its own DVD recordings. I just exchanged it and will try again. I have generally liked their products.
Does anyone know if there is a way to go back and forth between this machine and a 5005 (record one session on one and then another session on the other)? It seems to work sometimes but not reliably. The last firmware update I did on the 5005 was last summer.V. Abrego -
Has anybody been succesful playing PAL DVDs and/or recording PAL signals with this machine?If so what is the hack to do that?
I know about the region-free hack, but I assume the PAL signal is a different issue.
