  1. Hi

I have ripped a file from a dvd, and then encoded it with divx 6.0 - the file does not have any sound though when i try to play it in divx, or real player but will play with sound in media player - it is saved as an avi file with virtualdub-mpeg2

when i sent this file to someone else they do not get sound even with media player. i followed a guide on this site for ripping an individual chapter from a dvd, using virtualdub-mpeg2 to reauthor it, and then encoded with divx.

i have gotten other files that did not have sound that were done in divx that i have downloaded from elsewhere and am now thinking either i have done something wrong or it is rather coincidental...

    any ideas?

thanks for any help you may be able to offer me

Drop the finished Divx file into Gspot and see what it says. I suspect you didn't convert the audio properly. I use MP3 for Xvids or Divx most of the time. Did you check the audio settings or change them when you encoded it?

If not, it may have just passed the original audio through and it might be AC3 or some other format.

It is AC3, though I don't really know what that means - sorry very much a noob to all this - the video is great and like I said it played on mine, just not when I sent it - I will drop it in Gspot when I get home from work but if you have any other tips I would appreciate them...you guys are great to help a noob like me thanks!

You got to have ac3filter installed, to play AVI with AC3 audio.

    What mats.hogberg said.

If you don't mind some loss in audio quality, you could convert it to MP3 with VD when you process the video. It would generally be more compatible for people that don't have the capability to play AC3.
