I've combed the forums for two days now and I still don't know the answer. I have a Region 1 Toshiba SD-3900 and I planned on buying a Region 2 DVD box set (Phantasm I-IV Box Set by Anchor Bay).

I used one of the hacks listed on this site (posted Oct. 13 2005 by metebelis_3), and it seems to have successfully converted my player to a Region 0 player (can't confirm since I have no non-Region 1 DVDs as yet).

My question is, assuming the hack worked, will it also convert PAL to NTSC? I assumed it would since it was converted to Region 0, but now I'm hearing that that alone does not mean it will look right when playing a Region 2 PAL DVD on a Region 1 NTSC player even though it's been hacked to Region 0.

Can anyone tell me for sure whether the Toshiba SD-3900 will properly play a PAL DVD if the player has been hacked to be Region free?

You can use the permanent region free 0 hack on a sd3900 player! It will play the region 2 dvd on any ntsc tv (output on sd3900 will be ntsc even you are hacked to region 0 and playing a pal dvd). The only problem is that you will lose about 2 inches on all sides of the original PAL dvd on a 34 inch ntsc tv (that is because of the resolution difference....576 lines pal compared to 480 ntsc. You are looking at a cropped pal picture on your ntsc tv. Hope this helps! This info works as long as your pal DVD is code free.........meaning if not, it will play only on a Pal region 2 setting(displayed on the dvd disc). The ways around this are to have a reworked DVD player (special chip) that can be manually set to region 2, or have a reworked dvd player that is auto setting as far as region goes. I prefer auto setting myself. either way it makes your dvd think its on the correct region code! remember there is a difference between region free and code free!
