Dude, in short, you've ben jimmied!!

    YOU R NOT GETTING 80K TRANSFERS! ! !
Wake up and smell the fresh morning coffee!

    Currently, I'm Connected at 54,666
I have a pci v.90 modem, and my provider only supports v.90

Several factors are happening. . .

    * maybe you have a v.92 (I have a .v90) modem and my provider only
    provides v.90 - your's maybe providing U w/ v.92 and couple that w/ you
    v.92?? . . .lets move on. . .
    * your modem has software/hardware compression. Now, depending on
the file itself, ie, some form of ASCII type, it will undoubtably be able to
be compressed - will show 10k to 20k or more transfer, as I've experienced
this many, many times, but both modems have to be transmitting by
coensidence. I would speculate that you have/are downling an ASCII file
type of some variable - you said you can't view the file, he, he.... So, that's
most likly what's going on so far. Sometimes I'll get close to 40k while
downloading, but usually displays on my screen. While these transfers are
always fast, it's just some form of ASCII type file that is highly
compressable! Couple that with your modems v.92 or v.90 support and
it MPN or "M" something compression, and you'll off thinking "I don't
need Cable or DSL" ..."I've got a Fast 56k" - Ha, ha ha...
Believe me or not, I to sometimes get these kinds of D/L speeds, but 100%
of the time the file is garbage! Unlike you, I'm not as fooled with
these 80K display showing! Smell the Coffee! 56K means 56K Period!!
Not DSL or Cable or anthing else!
    * also couple this with these specials website (groks and morpheous, etc)
that have their specials setups and things.
    * someone on the other end has a SERIAL modem, hooked up to a very fast
SERIAL I/O card. With this kind of I/O card (sometimes 512k or more) hooked
up to an SERIAL modem and coupled with each other's COMpression's and the
likes, can yield a significant TRANSfer speed. Might be you case here.
You can get these kinds of I/O cards at compUSA mostly. I've ben meaning
to try these kinds of transfer, but I've not ben able to find another
person with the similar setup and I'm not going out to get another modem
(7th one) for this. Its mostly successful with ASCII type files only,
because they are highly compressable, that inlcudes WEB pages, hence the
new v.92 standard feature has ben added for faster WEB page D/L cause it
will highly compress ASCII AND, will compress those commonly used tags, etc
statements down to nothing - or close!
Note, there is some minor potential here w/ these SERIAL modems and fast
SERIAL I/O cards, but not much attention anywheres has ben focused on
    such embarkments.
Given the above SERIAL gingles, two people w/the right setup can get better
than 56k throughput but will mostly be using COMpression and stuff and
both PCs have to be pretty close by, not hundreds/thousands of miles aways!
I am the experimental type person, and have done something similar here
with a 28k serial modem a few years ago, but I'm not going to mention speed
and things here - don't want to start a thread or nonsense about 80k garbage
like whats going on here, so I'll spare you all!
    * or, the other end has connect problems/issues happening and is providing you
    with missinformation.

Trust me, it's not all UNcommon to see these kinds of Transfer speeds!
But only for ASCII type contents not AVI/MPGs, etc., etc.
    Currently, I'm connected at 54,666

I could go on and on and on, but this should get you started in thinking
what's actually happening in your case or experience. That's enough for now!

    ...Bummer!

    Later on.

  5. Well if thats the answer then I'm glad that someone has cleared it up... This second file shows up under properties as 204 Mb. This comes as a surpise to me that you could receive 200+ megs of anything in one hour on 56k.
I also can't view anything in it using The Playa or Virtual Dub.... Will be off in an hour for Chrimbo commitments, Have a good one everybody!!!!!!!

  7. One quick question addressed to VHELP. I've been digesting what you've said, but I'm left a little unsure over one thing. I now have 2 200MB files sat on my desktop. Are these 200Mb or not?? If they are then .... welll..no...I'm just confused anyway

    hay bilbogod,

I'll try and help some more dude, ...but

    BE MORE EXPLORITORY!

    * try dragging a file to every known AVI/MPEG app you have, ie,
Virtualdub, tmpg, any mpeg/avi editing software app you may have
then try ms word, excel, powerpoint, wordpad, notepad (one that's
    non-size limited as in NT)

What your goal should be is to rule out the possibility that you file
was of some ASCII type. I think you've ben jimmied, along with
the rest that R trying to D/L the file you stated.

I'd love to help further, but I lost my copy of Morpheous - only tried
using once, before I made some mejor changes in my system one
day ago, and wiped out the D/L file and Link for that matter.
If you have a link to a D/L of Morphious, I'd love to D/L it again
and give it a wirl and try that same file or too you downloaded just
to see for myself! I'm still at 54,666 connect. So, it would be fun
to see if I get past your 80k

Do you have a link or direct link to D/L Morphious, w/out having
to traverse through other websites? I'd like to just give Morphieous
a quick go - if I remember how to set it up and go real quickly.

    Thanks a bunch!
