  1. Right now I'm trying to pick my jaw up off of the carpet...... I have used the likes of Napster, Scour, Morpheus, Kazaa etc etc and always frustrated at how 56k users have to tolerate average download speeds of 4.8kbs (on a good day). What is going on today??? I am getting permanent averages of 80+ kbs sometimes going over 100. The Divx that I am downloading will remain anonymous for fear of the "Yellow Padlock" What I want to know folks is whether this should be normal?? I'm not a broadband user, and I don't know anyone who talks about these kinds of download speeds on 56k... Please give feedback R.E your download speeds on peer to peer sharing.

  3. I swear on my life I'm not lying, as God is my witness.
Only problem is the film is not playing with my existing divx codecs. Either I've downloaded 236mb AVI of nothing or I need to get hold of the missing codecs.
Btw - no picture or sound appearing via virtual dub - this is looking gloomy.
p.s Bandwidth section on Morpheus showed 2 individuals as 1024 and not the familiar 39.. Someone explain this..

  4. 80KB on a 56k noway

i get about 8 KB when i download but that is still too slow

  5. Pinoy - I've just sent you a p.m stating what the divx is. I can't explain this, I was phoning round my friends to see if they could explain. Although I can't get this file to play yet, that is almost irrelevant. This is definately 236Mb - I checked (right click and then properties) and the red led that represents hardrive action was constantly flickering as I downloaded.

  7. I DO have wireless broadband. In the early stages of testing, so until new transmitters are on line this spring still a little "slow". None the less right now I'm getting
30K a second or 301,645 bps. Soon should be up to 1.5 MBPS or 187K a second. I'm in the states. Do they even have broadband in the UK?

BTW, impossible to get 80K a second on a 56K modem. Maybe you're confusing bits a second with bytes a second? Note: 8 bits in a byte.

  8. The user (I sent hime a message to find out what connection they were on) was Pimental@musicity.com. Please don't treat this as some kind of joke, because this would be incredibly sad of me if it was. I will look through the users and see what I can find

  9. speedy - I'm not confusing this with 8kbs!! I have been downloading off these progs for over 15 months.
Put it this way, someone explain how I can have a 236Mb file sat on my desktop within 1 hour?? I can't play it, but what else could be transfered to my computer so quickly??
    Quote Quote
  10. Btw - About that speed being impossible, that's exactly what I thought hence the question.. When I started it was running at around 40+ which inceased to an average high of 78-80 and peaked at 101. I've frequently seen downloads start high and then settle down to the 4.8 level. I guess this is the conversions from digital to analogue.

  11. So tell us please since you're using a dial-up and I'm assuming Windows, double click on connect icon (two little computers) and see what the BPS being reported is. Rarely have I seen anyone get much beyond 52,400, mine was usually between 49,200-50,200.

  13. Speedy I'm on windows ME explain how to do this.. Btw I'm transfering the file at the mo with it showing 46.35kbs

  14. I've checked what files this user has and they are showing as a mixture of 1024 and 680 bandwidth.

  15. When connecting using a dial-up those ping and bong sounds you hear are your modem negotiating with some other modem in your ISP's modem bank. Its called handshaking. Your modem says basically I can receive data as fast as... and if the other modem agrees you're connected at that speed. If not, the speed keep dropping until handshaking is successful at some slower speed. You claiming you got a 236MB file within an hour using a 56K modem simply is beyond the bounds of reality and all common sense. Right click on the file, check properties and I'll bet it is nowhere near 236MB in size.

  16. Speedy, please please and anyone else look for the file on Morpheus... At this moment it is showing 37kbs on Morpheus. I am connected to the following users (lars.acn2@kazza.com,jtgg@musicity.com,emergiman@m usicity.com.Laraburley@musicity.com,Le_diable05@ka zaa.com

I am no techie, I don't understand this but if you try to connect you should see whatI mean. The file I downloaded earlier shows 236Mb AVI with a running time of 2hr 10...

  17. Pinoy, please tell me if you have located this yet?? I'm starting to go crazy.

  18. Its now done 74.5MB showing 48 mins remaining until complete

  19. The reason why you are dling fast on morpheus is you are taking bits and pieces from more than one person. So you may have alot of downloads going of the same thing at once. There is no way that a 56k modem is gonna hit that high speed. I have seen modems get 15kbs but that's about it

  20. If you would kindly check out this file you will see what I mean. It's because I don't see how this can be possible that I am asking you guys. The figs I am mentioning are the total accumulated download speed. The highest coming from just 1 individual at the moment is 17.77
