  1. I just ordered a new PC which I am planning to use exclusively for DVD production. It is a 64-bit system and I probably need to purchase new software that is 64-bit compatable (my existing editors are all getting ancient and I probably need to update anyways.) I plan to do most of my editing in .avi and occasionally in MPEG. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Which OS are you going to run? Which apps?

If it were me I would have a multiboot and use 32bit XP except for special 64 bit apps.

If you want to experiment or develop in 64bit XP or Linux, make them a separate boot source.

Don't expect to find much video support. Check to see if AVID has anything affordable. My opinion is 64bit is 3 years from prosumer mainstream. Early releases will have "issues" that slow any real productivity. Expections are AVID spec workstations.

These apps may run but not necessarily with any advantace from 64bit.

If it is of any interest, one of the tools here for converting various formats over to vcd/svcd/dvd mpeg files claims to be 64-bit now.

It's called Cucusoft. I have been trying it out on my ASUS A8V Deluxe w/FX53 AMD 64-bit CPU.

Seems to work very well. I haven't run any comparisons yet - but it looks like we should see this sort of thing develop within our lifetime (heh).
Whatever doesn't kill me, merely ticks me off. (Never again a Sony consumer.)

Cucusoft uses dshow for input therefor you would need 64bit versions of all dshow filters for it to work in 64bit. Fact is that an app doesn't need to be 64bit to work in X64.
