I've been using studio 9 (V9.3) for over a year for capturing and editing avi without problem.
1. Capture DV via firewire
2. Edit *.avi (delete scenes, transition, title)
3. Save as new *.avi
4. Substract video datecode by DV_DATECODE from the new *.avi
5. Use VIRTUALDUB (subtitle filter) to permanently encode to the video
Somehow on my last project something unusual showed up. The datecode was displayed as [00.01.1900 00:00:00] for all frame numbers whenever I use new *.avi but it look fine on *.avi
