hey everyone, im trying to work a spreadsheet, but im not too familiar with Excel, so i dont really know how to change certain settings. anyways, my problem is that i need to enter numbers in a spreadsheet, numbers such as 0123 where the 0 is crucial. however, when i enter 0123 and click another box, the 0123 cuts off the 0 and ends up 123, which i DONT want. my friend suggested that i put a space inbetween like this: 0 123, but that looks awkward, plus its not how i want it. so if anyone can please advice on how to enter 0123 so that it will stay as 0123, i would really appreciate it. bless u all.

There is only one way to do it, but it will no longer be a number. Right click on the cell, select cell properties, and make it text instead of a number. You can also change the alignment if you wish.
Btw, you CAN sort on the value, just not do any numerical calculcations.TANSTAAFL -
Highlight the required cells, go to Format tab, Cells, then under Number tab, select text under the category, and click OK. Now the 0 should be displayed before the numbers as 0123.
EDIT: Looks like greenlantern and Prot got there before me. There were no posts as I replied.

Right Click desired cells > Format Cells > "Custom" Under "Type"
put in four zeroes. The next time you put numbers (depending on how many) into those cells 0 will precede the number you put in (in this case up to 4 digits).
IE type 12 and you should come out with 0012 automatically
type 343 and you should see 0343 -
Yup, this is the way to go.Originally Posted by deadpac
