Let us know what you find then and good luck

    P.S.
Burn a couple of sample videos unto a DVD disc and play back on your regular stand alone DVD player. Have one sample be the LPCM audio while the other sample uses the AC-3 audio.

Various filters on a computer (like the AC3 Filter) and their settings can make AC-3 behave (sound) abnormal. If you use different "tracks" on the DVD you should be able to get both samples on one DVD-R or DVD-RW etc.

    By jove FulciLives...

I think you did it! -31db dialog normalization, uncompressed (line mode none) @448kbps, 256kbps, and 192kbps sounds EXTREMELY, EXTREMELY close.

Maybe Sound Forge could get me 1 hair closer... (SCREW IT!). I'm satisfied.

    One more road block overcome!

    Thanks all!

I had suggested 448kbps 2.0 AC-3 because you really seemed to want something as close to LPCM as possible ... and there is nothing wrong with 448kbps 2.0 AC-3 but the bitrate that seems to make the "most sense" for 2.0 AC-3 is 256kbps ... unless you have really amazing hearing (and high end audio gear to go with your wonderful ears).

    FulciLives,

I'm a purist at heart and default always to archive quality if I can. But I'm with you. My ears are good but they're not THAT good. My Panny dvd recorder outputs 256 kbps AC-3 and it sounds fine. I think 224 kbps would be fine as well if there WERE size contraints.
