  1. I've just bought an LG GSA-5163D DVD Rewriter and I'm new to DVD burning (as this is my first DVD Writer). I've also bought a pack of 5 Sony 8x DVD-R discs.

Anyway, I wanted to back up a commercial region 2 DVD onto a DVD-R. I've heard about this bitsetting malarky and I was just wondering if I need to set it for a DVD-R disc?

    I can't find any sites that say it's possible to bit set a DVD-R but I'm 100% sure it's possible for a DVD+R disc.

The problem is I want my backups to play on my Yakumo XL2 DVD Player, Alba DVD54 DVD Player and a Playstation 2.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Bitsetting sets a DVD+R disc to be read as DVD-ROM. DVD-R inherently is recorded as DVD-ROM. It won't be displayed as a DVD-ROM inside of DVD Decrypter, but it's part of the spec.

  4. So I shouldn't have any problems with compatibility?

I was planning on using DVD Decrypter to burn onto the DVD-Rs.

Totally depends on the standalone DVD player(s) you are using.

As time goes on, you will find less and less standalone players that won't play DVD-Video on plain old DVD+R (not bitset) and DVD-R.

Right now, I find that standalone players that won't play plain old DVD-Video on plain old DVD+R or DVD-R is quite low. So low that I don't worry about it. I worry much more about them being able to play VCD, which most will do. The only thing I worry about a standalone playing is SVCD and DivX which the vast majority will not do.

I've found using a quality blank is more important than whether I use DVD+R (bitset or not) or DVD-R.

    YMMV.

I just wanted to point out that this isn't necessarily true.

All of my burned DVD-R discs are read as DVD-ROM in DVD Decrypter.

Just thought I'd point that out.

This is my understanding of bitsetting, which is supported by my Plextor 712-a. The lead-in for DVD-R is already included (written) on the blanks so when you write to a DVD-R the lead-in identifies it as a DVD-R.

The lead-in for DVD+R is blank. When you writer writes to a DVD+R, it knows that it's a DVD+R because the lead-in is blank and sets the bit to +R ... Unless your writter supports bitsetting ... in which case it can be set to DVD-ROM.

No, a DVD-R has a DVD-R book type (0010) which is different from the DVD-ROM book type (0000).
