Sorry if this has been covered. I did search and did read but didn't find what I wanted to know...
I've been converting Anime (I didn't encode it) that is encoded at 640x480 23FPS AVI's
According to DivxToDVD the structure of 1 of the files (they are all very similar if not same I have about 160 of them) are as follows:
Audio (1 Stream)
- en - mp3, 48000 Hz, stereo, 125 kb/s
Source Details
- Input file type: avi
duration: 00:23:19.608
Aspect ratio: 1.3333 (4:3)
steam count: 2
#1 - video: msmpeg4, 640x480, 23.98 fps
#2 0 Audio: mp3, 48000 Hz, stereo, 125 kb/s
According to windows xp properties summary window:
width: 640 pixels
height: 480 pixels
Audio:
Duration: 0:23:19
Bit Rate: 125kbps
audio format: MPEG Layer-3
Video:
Frame rate: 23 frames/second
Date rate: 131kbps
Video Sample size: 24bit
Video compression: DivX codec
I've been able to put them on DVD with both DivxtoDVD with no problem (no menus) and if I wanted to add menus I used DVD-Lab Pro.
However my problem is when I play them back on my TV the subtitles get cut off (fall below the visable area on the screen).
Since these are from aired episodes in japan I don't know if I should be encoding them in NTSC or PAL and since the actual video size isn't DVD standard I could use either or (NTSC: 720x480 or PAL: 720x567)
How can I put these files onto DVD and still be able to see the subtitles withOUT having to change my TV's settings to 16:9 Enhanced mode?
Is there any other programs that I could use? I don't want to use TMPGEnc since when I convert it the video is all choppy afterwards and there is much loss in quality!
I've been using the programs that I've been using since they are very quick at encoding them. I will give up *SOME* time for the encoding but I'd like the video to be decent when it's finished you know?!
help me out guys... hopefully I provided you with enough info!
Jon

Take a look in the 'Subtitles' forum on this site. You should be able to resize the video and add black borders when you encode. The TV overscan is hiding your subtitles.
Here's one thread:

Should be some more posts that use similar tools to what you have.
