  1. Would there be a noticable difference between an uncomperssed AVI and a 12,000 bitrate MPEG-2?

    Done any experiments yourself ?

Personally I don't think I'd notice, but you're not me.
    If in doubt, Google it.

    thecoalman,

That 8mb cbr mpeg encode seems a little "crappy" compared to what Vegas outputs for me at the same rate. What encoder did you use?

Ulead MSP using a standard setting, it uses a version of the mainconcept encoder. One thing I did overlook and forgot to mention when posting that image is that those lights are moving and flashing extremely fast. About 5 frames per flash if I remeber correctly. That appears to affect the encode quality. Here's a screen cap from a 3000CBR MPEG, as you can see the lights exhibit really bad macroblocking compared to the rest of the video:

These images were from a test I did in my attempt at comparing encode quailty if you were encoding from AVI or reencoding from MPEG 2. There's more here:

There's a link to the DV-AVI source file available in that post. If you want to encode it your self please do. I know BJ_M did a pretty extensive comparison on encoders a while back, maybe it's time to do another one ... perhaps in a new thread.

    thecoalman,

I'm using Vegas which ALSO uses the MainConcept encoder. So I don't know how much better my encodes would be of this clip. I do know that pretty much the quality that goes in is the quality that comes out with Vegas. Maybe vbr?

BTW, how do you like the new version of MSP? I received a review copy a couple of months ago and it was very NON ntuitive for me. But then again, I'm not a professional video editor. Very happy with Vegas! Only found one bug so far with the audio filters.

Haven't upgraded and probably won't. I've been toying with the idea of getting a Matrox or DVStorm. Premeire practically comes free with either.

Neither am I.... But some day I hope to grow up and be one.... :P
