Okay dont hate me for asking this question, but I DID search the site and cant find help...What exactly is bitrate and what does changing it around do? I keep seeing to change it higher to get higher quality, but why? What does the bitrate actually do?

Hello all you pros out there? Not what does it do, but what is the bitrate may be a better question
-
If you are not kidding .... Bitrate is exactly that: bit-rate ... a bit is the smallest unit of digital measure (a zero or one)standard 8 make a byte 1024 bytes make a kilo-byte .... 1024 kilobytes make a mega-byte .... 1024 megabytes make a giga-byte ...etc. So, if you can standardize the amount of data that can be written on a cd @650-900 MB (some flux), then you can set parameters.
So bitrate is the sheer # of bits per second for your video stream ... ex; 1150 kb/s for vcd ... determines how much time/quality per cd/dvd you can write to.
Close enough for government work I hope. -
Do you know where to get cds that hold more than 700 mb? You said cds from 650 to 700 - this indicates that they exist, i cant find any cdr media to hold more than 700, but if i could the vcd quality could be better right

Don't worry too much with specifics. The old adage applies here ... more is better.
To break it down very simply, the bitrate deals with the overall quality of the output. Increasing the bitrate increases the quality ... period. It's kind of like how much data you're dedicating to the video per second. If you dedicate a bunch of data per second of video, the quality will be better. If you skimp on the data, the quality will be worse.
Since by raising the bitrate, you're increasing the amount of data per second, of course the file will be bigger and you may need more CD's to finish your project.
You may run into this also with mp3's you find on the net. MP3's encoded at 96kps are far inferior to those encoded at 320kps (supposing an identical encoding process and source materials). And as luck would have it, the 320kps file would be 3 times as large ... neat, huh?
Good luck.

too busy,
b4 you try to find discs that hold 90-99 mins of "music" first find out if your cd-rw can burn past 80 mins .... mine was designed for 74 mins and can "overburn" to 79:17 with 80 min discs & @ 78 w/ 74 discs so i have 79:15 as my set limit for vcd or equal amount of data.
Find out 1st then check circuit city & compusa, also do a search on this forum. -
I searched online and found that my cdrw drive does have the capability to burn 99 min cds, but are you saying that circuit city or somewhere is going to have 99 min blank cds or im going to have to over burn to get to 99 min from something else
-
80min - 700mb CDr'S Can hold 800mb of video Data when burned.
How?
Put it this way a CD-r is Manipulated By NERO 5.5.5.14 w/new Plug ins
