I'm curious if anyone can provide some specific advice for successfully getting the S7000 to read a backup. More specifically, I'm looking for media recommendations, process or anything else that may improve my test results.

I've tried both a Benq 1621 and a Matshita drive using -R and +R/RW, tried all book type settings incl. DVD-ROM and so on and so on...

So this post is not so much a request for help on general b/u issues but a request to other S7000 owners who have been successful at getting this 1st generation DVD player to play b/u's! BTW, all b/u's work with my other two players okay. I've read spatterings here and there where this player is mentioned to work but nothing specific.

  2. I dunno IRIS about your Benq, but I have found that both DVD+R DL and DVD+R single-layer discs work on my DVP-S7000. I am using a Pioneer DVR-109 with Buffalo firmware (to make DVD-ROM book type on DVD+R SL), RecordNow 7.3, and Verbatim DVD+R media, and it all works fine.

Previously I had been using a DVR-103 and DVD-R media and these do NOT play on my Sony.

The Benq afforded the ability to change the book type using what I had at hand like ImgBurn. I couldn't find any utilities to change the book type with my Mashita. I suspected from the beginning that the DVP-S7K likely wouldn't play anything that didn't have a booktype of DVD-ROM since the player was manufactured before writable DVD's existed. That said, it does appear others like yourself have been able to get it play b/u's. I'm still struggling with my testing. A couple of quick questions:

    1. Is there a particular speed you use that produces better results or do you just burn at the max. speed supported?

    2. Have you experienced any failures using compression?

    Thanks

  4. Question 1: I've only been using DVD+R since January, and have tried Verbatim DVD+R (two different types) at <8x, 8x, 12x, and 16x. I've tried Verbatim DVD+R DL at 2.4x and 6x. All these have worked (note the Pioneer always sets DL discs as DVD-ROM). I tried Memorex DVD+R DL and made 3 coasters and will never buy Memorex again.

Question 2: Sorry, don't understand this question!

Oh, it occurs to me that I tried DVD-RW some years ago w/the Sony and THESE WORKED!!!???? Don't know why. I've never used -RW though to make backups of DVDs, probably because of the cost at the time (and I bought another player that played DVD-R).
