  1. I bought a nice SVHS on ebay that doesn't record but according to the seller plays great. I took a chance because it was cheap.
I'm not interested in recording since I will be using it to playback tapes for capturing. But not knowing the inner workings of the heads, should I expect problems in playback now or in the future?

    What model of machine?
No recording at all? No audio?

The heads are probably fine; they are shared by the record and playback electronics.
If playback is fine, then chances are that something is wrong with the record electronics.

  3. Its a Toshiba W808, one of the "ProDrum "V" Technology" units.
I asked what exactly happened when you tried to record, but it was being sold through another retailer not from the previous owner, so they didn't know. I haven't gotten it yet.
I'm hoping you're right, that its something wrong with the electronics.

Provided it plays , and you can also , via the connection you using , able to see tv channels , then there shouldnt be a problem .

The recording issue is mostly caused by the chip that controls that part of the function , has ceased operation , this dosent mean that the unit will pack it in soon , it could last years yet .

However , the fact remains , that the ebay seller made a deliberate attempt not too disclose this particular problem up front , and if you dont ask before buying things in ebay , you do take a greater chance of being ripped off .

As for repairing , if you want too , it's not worth it considering the prices they can be bought for at retail outlets ... here a new 4 head lg unit sells for $98.00au ... cheap

  5. I should have made it clear that the seller DID disclose that the record function did not work.
