  1. I have earlier used ”Ulead Video Studio 6.02.0213 SE Basic”. Now I also have ”Pinnacle 9.1.2.SE” and would like to use that instead. I have earlier made AVI-files from my DV-tapes and saved them on the Hard disk. When I now try to open these AVI-files in Pinnacle it says it cannot be opened.
I thought an AVI-file was an AVI-file and not depending on which program created it.
I can open an AVI-file created in Pinnacle with Ulead!

I used to think that all AVI files were the same, but the more reading that I did on here, I realized that an AVI file is more of a container or a file format. What actually dictates the ability to read the file is the codec that was involved in encoding the video. There is a tool (see Tools at the left) called Gpsot that is supposed to read the AVI and tell you what codec(s) were used. Hopefully someone else will jump in here and explain how to get Pinnacle to read the Ulead files.
Tools used: ScenalyzerLive 4.0, Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0, Adobe After Effects 7.0 Professional, Adobe Encore DVD 2.0, IFOedit 0.96, DVD-lab PRO 1.53, Adobe Audition 2.0

  3. AVI is a container. It can contain video and audio in many different forms. Not all programs know how to access the different types of video and audio.

My guess is you have a DV AVI type 1 vs type 2 problem. Try the type 1 to type 2 converter near the bottom of this page:

  4. If you want to convert a lot of AVI files from DV type1 to DV type 2 it is very convenient to use DVdate.

There's also DV Type 1 to DV Type 2 Converter.

The tool that erayboul referred to, but misspelt and so the auto-tool link didn't pick it up, is GSpot - v2.52 beta does MPEG's too. There's also AVICodec.
There is some corner of a foreign field that is forever England: Telstra Stadium, Sydney, 22/11/2003.

    Carpe diem.

If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much room.

  6. Thank you all for your help. It was the type 1 and 2 problem. I must say that it is too bad that Pinnacle cannot manage that when Ulead can read both types. I believe I have better upgrade my Ulead instead because it is many files I have to convert.

  7. You're going to find that Pinnacle Studio is full of bugs too.

The simplest alternative will be a DVD recorder with AV input, but you don't have the funs of learning curves.
