  1. After burning a DVD-RW on a home recorder (not computer), here's a directory listing:

    10/10/2005 02:42 PM 14,336 VIDEO_TS.BUP
    10/10/2005 02:42 PM 14,336 VIDEO_TS.IFO
    10/10/2005 02:42 PM 53,248 VIDEO_TS.VOB
    10/10/2005 02:42 PM 86,016 VTS_01_0.BUP
    10/10/2005 02:42 PM 86,016 VTS_01_0.IFO
    10/10/2005 02:42 PM 1,073,170,432 VTS_01_1.VOB
    10/10/2005 02:42 PM 1,073,170,432 VTS_01_2.VOB
    10/10/2005 02:42 PM 1,073,170,432 VTS_01_3.VOB
    10/10/2005 02:42 PM 1,069,350,912 VTS_01_4.VOB

I know the large *.vob files are the main video. What do the other file extensions do?

    Thanks.

IFO files are directions so the DVD player knows how to play the DVD (ie- whether to start with the menu or the video, where chapters are and other information). BUP files are exact duplicates of the corresponding IFO file- so if an IFO gets corrupted the player can go to the bup for the same information.

Makes no difference whether the disk is done on a recorder, computer or a commercial DVD.

Video_ts is the first play video file .. this is usually a copyright warning or something similar..

Basically Video_ts.ifo And vts_01_0.ifo etc are instructions that determine what order the video files are played, which audio track to play etc and also tell the dvd player where to find these files on the disk as well as several other complex operations to numerous to mention here (it would take a week to type the post if i went into detail)

video_ts.bup, vts_01_0.bup etc are just duplicates of their relevent .ifo files ... they serve as a backup in case the actual ifo files cannot be read ... the dvd player will switch to the bup files if it fails to read the ifo files

Try this link to my site for a simpler, and I think a clearer description of exactly what does what on a DVD and why
