    I've been happily using my datavideo dac-100 to transfer hi8 to dv using the ms codec...
    Now I just read here that "of course converting it first to ms dv will kill all quality .. "
    What's a better solution?
    Suggestions?
    Thx

    Whoever said that needs to explain why that might be the case. MS DV is the "Chevy" of DV codecs but DV is a standard and if MS DVD doesn't meet spec, we all need to know why.

    It would be interesting to see a pro-con on DV codecs.

    a direct conversion is a much better choice and can be done in many apps
    In the context of the thread, I think it was more tongue-in-cheek than anything to take too much notice of.
    If in doubt, Google it.

    oic...a direct conversion to the final format i guess...sure...the less converting, the better i suppose.
    Well, i'm just about to get serious so I'll start with the pana codec

    in your opinion...is there any codec worth actually buying for:
    hi8=>dv/avi
    hi8=>dv=>dvd
    hi8=>dv=>wmv
    or that's a good bargain for the $?
    thx

    You are not using the MS DV codec to capture from the dac-100 -- the dac-100 is doing the compression. The MS codec, or whatever other one you are using, is only used to decode the DV data for display or conversion.

    ic...the dac-100 is using it's own dv codec...it's a done deal. The time when the panasonic or even mainconcept codec is used in my case is in editing, rendering, and displaying...right?
    thanks

    PS - You'll have to forgive my ignorance...I html, php, javascript, and css too much...heh heh

    Yes it is. Think of the DV transcoders as similar to the hardware MPeg2 encoders but 2-way in many cases. The DAC-100, Canopus ADVC, etc. hardware decode NTSC or PAL to YUV, filters and performs A/D plus compression in the DV format and then realtime transfers to IEEE-1394.

    DV camcorders do the same thing but have bi-directional hardware (as do transcoders like the ADVC-100/110) that allows realtime hardware decoding for TV playback display. The DV hardware decoder is also used for realtime TV Prviewing over IEEE-1394 from pro DV editing programs like Premiere Pro, FCP and Vegas.
