HEre is what I want to do. I have a clip captured from a Beta tape. Now, it is an AVI clip.
I'd like to beef up a blank screen sequence in the very begining of the clip that lasts several seconds by superimposing JPG pics on to the sequence's frames. (Or perhaps text).
The final result would now contain the blank screens + new JPG pics; other than that, sound track and AVI lenght would not be altered.
Is there a way to accomplish that?
Thanks,
Armando

Hi Armando
You are going to need to delve into the area of video authoring using programs like premiere pro etc.
It will depend on what format you want as an end result.
Micro$oft Movie Maker may do it for free (it's been a while since I used it) -
Garry,
I was hoping the intermediate result to be AVI, which I'd then run through TMGENC to encode and then author a DVD
Thanks,

Any video editor should allow you to insert an image. I use Video Studio for this. Rather than superimposing a jpg on top of a blank (black/white?) screen, the background color of your jpg will be the blank area. I create a new file in my photo editor with my desired background color. Then, import the actual picture into it and save it as a .bmp. You'll want to save in an uncompressed format (jpg is compressed) since further compression will take place when encoding. In Video Studio, I can then save the file (along with transitions, edits, subtitles, etc) as an .avi for encoding.

Thanks 44echo,
If I understood your suggestion...by appending frames to the original AVI clip would not extend the clip? Therefore you'd have to add (or extend) the original sound track?
Thanks -
So far, I've only added images to the beginning and end of my videos. With Video Studio, you can insert images only between, before, or after clips (AFAIK). Unless you add audio to play during these images, there is no sound, which keeps the original audio the same size. When the clip ends, both audio and video end. You're just sticking the picture in between the 2 clips. That's how I do it anyway. I'm still a noob so it may not be the best way, but the results are what I'm looking for.
What software are you using? I really like what Video Studio can do for the price. It fits my noob needs perfectly.44E -
44echo,
I thought of superimposing JPG exactly to avoid the sound situation. I've used VirtuaDub, TMGENC, Ulead DWS 2.
Thanks for your thoughts,

I do exactly what you are wanting to do in a Video Authoring App & save it as an AVI (for future conversion)
I do not think it can be done in TMGenc
I looked at Movie maker & cannot seem to overlay a graphic on the scene. But it can be done before or after your scene easily.
However with much experimentation & heartache you can probably do it in Movie maker by overlaying the audio as a single file, splitting your AVI & removing EXACT timed segments & replacing with EXACT timed photos.
THe biggest issue with the resulting movie will be sync of Audio. Especially at your new entry to authoring. -

I PM'ed you.
EDIT: Yeah, I guess there would be a "sound situation" if you wanted the audio to continue while the picture is shown. Doh!Ignore the PM.

Use the following logo filter for virtualdub, which lets you choose start and stop frames for overlaying the picture.
http://neuron2.net/logo/logo16b4.zip
the pix should be 24 bit .bmp files. -
This is easily done in any good Video editor.
If you want to do it for free, you can try this:
Open your avi in Virtualdub (choose Direct Stream Processing) and cut and save it to two sections. The 1st section will be the blank video you want to edit and the 2nd section will be the rest. Save the audio of the 1st clip out to a wav file.
Now download Wax2. It's a Free and very powerful Video compositor. Open Wax2 and change the project settings to match your avi. Import your avi and all jpg's you want to use. Drop your clip into the timeline, then insert your jpg's in the tracks above. You can resize them, animate them, whatever you want. When you're done, just render it out to an avi using the same codec as original.
Now import edited avi and the wav file you saved into Virtualdub, then choose "Append Avi" and import Clip-2. You should have the edited blank section merged back with the rest and all audio should play as before. Now just save as avi or FrameServe out to Encoder.
*Note it would be a lot easier to do in a good video editor, but this is one of many free ways you can do it without loosing any quality.I stand up next a mountain and chop it down with the ledge of my hand........ I'm a Voodoo child.... Jimi Hendrix, -
Thanks yo'all...
I managed to do what dipstick described but using Windows Movie Maker. The remaining issue now is that WMM saves the result in AVI type 1 . Becasue the original is type 2, VirtualDub doesn't like the conflict when I tried to join them back.
Isn't that fun?

Avisynth works with virtualdub , and can do the same thing , though finding people with the knowledge on its usage can be hard enough since the site devoted to its usage dosent appear to be around no more ..
