It's says those aren't for use with DVD. I tried a similiar product once and it caused excessive "wobbling".

  3. I've had a lot on online rentals arrive with some sort of (thin film) protection on the printed layer.

There is a product like this made for DVDs, it is called D-Skin.

    www.d-skin.com

They do add wobble to the disc, so cheap discs which may already have problems or that are borderline will most likely have problems, but you only use quality media, right?

I have included two transfer rate tests below (although it is from a data disc, not a DVD-Video disc) it will give an idea of how well the drive can transfer data from the disc (after all, video is just another form of data).

Transfer rate test with d-skin on:

    Transfer rate test without d-skin:

as you can see, quite a bit of wobble is introduced, as the drive has to slow down to be able to read the disc, but unless I am mistaken, set top players do not play video at 12-16x. If anyone knows off the top of their head what the exact speed (range) dvd video discs are played at from start to end, I'd be curious to know (but not curious enough to make my lazy fingers go search google :P )
Some people say dog is mans best friend. I say that man is dog's best slave... At least that is what my dogs think.
