Hey I was looking to buy a 3rd dvd burner. I have two Benq 1620 & 1640 right now. Looking at the Plextor. Any opinion on PX-740A or PX-716SA. Which one of these is better. Thanks all.

They have compared a few drives, looks like you are better off buying a 3rd BenQ.

Maximum PC gave the Plex 716 a rare 10 Kickass rating. I have this drive, and I agree.

I would carefully consider the input of some of the members of this forum about different brands of burners. In my opinion, you will get more qualified opinions than you will from a magazine review. These reviews don't help much with the most fundamental question which is - How well do they burn discs. That is; how well does the media they burn play in players? Magazine reviewers don't have any idea on this issue. A number of people on this forum do from their own experience.

Also, you may want to wait for Plextor's upcoming 18X DVD burner (!):

I had been a long time supporter of plextor until I had troubles with my plextor 712A right from the getgo. Not what I explected for a premium price, sure their service is good, but you can get drives cheaper that perform just as well. The most attractive part is plextools, but you have to pay to get Plextools XL (already paying a premium for the drive...)

but that is just my two cents.

  7. Plextor is supposed to be the KING of DVD burners. The problem is that they are much more expensive than most.
I have bought a Plextor in the past and had nothing but trouble eg very loud vibrating noise that you could hear even from outside in the garden, not good!
IMO,like Skith pointed out,you can save money and get cheaper and very reliable drives that can do the same as Plextor.

    The choice is all yours.

I've had zero issues with my Plextor 716A, since Feb.

I'm not quite a "power user" like some around here, but I've had no problem burning CDs and DVDs that play just fine in my car stereo and stand-alone DVD player, respectively.

Also no issues playing back DVDs via MPC or ripping CDs with EAC.

    My 2 cents,
    Jim

For the price of a Plextor 716 drive one can buy 2 BENQ 1640 drives. I have a Plextor 708a drive which still works great on 4x dvd media. There have been too many problems with the 716 drive & it's expensive which is why I haven't bought one. If cost is not a problem for you then buy the Plextor 716. The BENQ 1650 will be released soon!

  15. I think the 740 is really a BenQ ... one of those Plextors that came out after the 716 has the Philips chipset.

Plextor drives are for a niche market. If you're not going to use the special features that their drives offer, I wouldn't recommend buying one. If you only want quality burns then there are other drives that will do the job for less.
